As you’re setting up your practice, build relationships with other independent professionals. One way you could do that would be to join a community of independent-professionals that already exists. If you don’t find one in your industry, you could work on creating your own or reaching out to other independent professionals that you identify.

What’s the advantage of building relationships with other independent professionals? One, folks that you can share lessons learned with. Number two, people that you can share market intelligence or what sort of fees are you seeing as normal in the industry? Also, people who are potentially going to be able to bring you into their project opportunity; or if they become aware of a project opportunity that’s not a fit for them, they may be willing to pass that project opportunity to you.

Now in some cases, people might charge you a referral fee for that or if they think that you’re gonna be kind of working closely together, they may be willing to do that without any kind of referral fee, expecting that you might share project opportunities with them in the future.

But a great, important way of business development is building relationships with other independent professionals in your industry.
