Do not use your aol.com or yahoo.com or gmail.com email account for doing business as an independent professional. It just makes you look like an amateur.

I’m surprised by the number of independent professionals that I’ve seen using a personal email account like that. It just doesn’t come across well with clients. For example, would you want to go out and hire an attorney or a bookkeeper or an accountant who’s using an aol.com address? I don’t think so. And it’s not that hard.

We already talked before in previous videos about when you’ve chosen the name for your firm, go ahead and register the domain. It’s pretty straightforward to set up branded email. G Suite is a natural choice for a lot of people. You could also work with Microsoft. G Suite’s pretty easy. Google “set up G Suite”; it’ll take you right to the site.

If you’ve already purchased the domain with a domain registrar, ah, you’ll come to the point where it asks you, “Have you already purchased the domain?” Just say, “Yes.” If it’s done, for example, with GoDaddy or one of the other common registrars; there’s integration now, so it’s pretty easy. You just push a button. You may need to log in to your domain registrar, and, you know, input some information. But the directions walk you through it. It’s not that hard.

And, at least for G Suite, G Suite branded email with your firm’s domain, it will look and feel just like Gmail. So, it’s not that hard to do. Takes maybe 15 minutes the first time you do it. And then you’re set up and it’s definitely two or three steps up in professionalism from using a personal email account
