Business Continuity Plans

Business Continuity Plans

A Day-1 disruption—whether cyberattack, system outage, or supply interruption—can erase deal value within hours. A robust Business Continuity Plan (BCP) safeguards critical operations, clarifies decision authority, and accelerates recovery.

Key Objectives

  • Protect life, safety, and regulatory compliance under all scenarios.
  • Maintain critical customer and supplier commitments.
  • Restore systems, facilities, and data to defined recovery targets (RTO/RPO).

Structured Development Approach

  • Identify Critical Functions
    • Map essential processes: order fulfilment, customer support, payroll, regulatory reporting.
  • Conduct Risk and Impact Assessment
    • Rank threats by likelihood and business impact: power failure, cloud outage, cyber breach, natural disaster.
  • Define Recovery Strategies
    • Determine alternate sites (cold, warm, hot).
    • Set recovery time objectives (RTO) and recovery point objectives (RPO) for all key systems.
    • Establish manual workarounds for short-term service continuity.
  • Assign Roles and Decision Authority
    • Create Incident Commander, IT Recovery Lead, Communications Lead, and Business-Unit Liaisons.
    • Publish a contact tree with 24/7 numbers and escalation thresholds.
  • Document Procedures
    • Step-by-step recovery playbooks for each critical application and facility.
    • Vendor-support contact details and contract numbers for expedited service.
  • Provision Resources
    • Stock emergency kits: network spares, generator fuel, PPE.
    • Pre-arrange hotel blocks and transport for relocation of key staff if sites are inaccessible.
  • Test and Validate
    • Table-top exercises quarterly; full failover at least annually.
    • Capture lessons learned and update procedures within two weeks of each test.
  • Integrate With Day-1 Command Centre
    • Include BCP triggers and hand-offs in the cut-over war-room run-book.
    • Ensure communication scripts align with Chapter 9 messaging protocols.

Deliverables Checklist

  • Business Impact Analysis report with RTO/RPO matrix.
  • Role-based recovery playbooks for systems, facilities, and functions.
  • Emergency contact tree and escalation ladder.
  • Inventory of alternate sites and backup resources.
  • Test schedule, results log, and remediation actions.

Common Pitfalls

  • Limiting tests to IT failovers and ignoring facility or supply-chain scenarios.
  • Storing BCP documents solely on network drives—unavailable during a network outage.
  • Overlooking third-party dependencies (cloud providers, logistics partners).
  • Failing to align BCP communication steps with corporate and regulatory disclosure requirements.

A rigorously developed and tested Business Continuity Plan ensures the new company can withstand unexpected shocks on Day 1 and beyond.
