HubSpot Tiers: Free, Starter, Professional, Enterprise

HubSpot Tiers: Free, Starter, Professional, Enterprise

HubSpot offers multiple subscription tiers, each unlocking progressively richer features. When choosing a tier, it helps to understand the key limitations on contacts, automation, custom properties, pipelines, and other CRM capabilities. This chapter provides a general comparison of Free, Starter, Professional, and Enterprise in the areas that matter most to independent consultants or small teams—recognizing that exact details can change over time and may vary by region.

Note: All HubSpot tiers share the same core CRM foundation for storing Contacts, Companies, and Deals. The differences lie in certain feature caps, automation, and advanced functionality.

1. HubSpot Free

  1. Contacts & Companies
    • No upper limit on total contacts stored, but you can only send marketing emails to a limited number of “Marketing Contacts” each month (e.g., 2,000 email sends).
    • All contacts are in a single database; no advanced segmenting or lead scoring.
  2. Deals
    • You can create and manage deals in the pipeline, but you’re limited to one pipeline with a basic set of deal stages (you can edit stage names).
    • You can track deals, assign owners, and set close dates. Basic reporting is minimal.
  3. Custom Properties
    • 10 total custom properties allowed across all objects (Contacts, Companies, Deals combined). This is a strict limit for Free.
    • If you exceed 10, you must upgrade or delete existing properties.
  4. Custom Pipelines
    • Typically, only one pipeline for deals is allowed on Free. You can rename or rearrange stages in that pipeline, but you can’t create a second pipeline.
  5. Custom Stages
    • You can rename and reorder the existing pipeline’s stages. But since you only have one pipeline, you can’t have multiple distinct sets of stages for different processes.
  6. Tasks
    • Create unlimited tasks (to-dos), assign them to yourself or a user, but you have no advanced task automation or queue features.
  7. Workflow Automation
    • Not included for marketing/sales automation. You can set up a single-step follow-up email to a form submission in Marketing Free, but that’s not the same as multi-step workflows.
    • You can manually log calls, tasks, or use sequences is not available in free.
  8. Other Key Limitations
    • Basic email marketing: ~2,000 send limit per month.
    • No advanced analytics or custom reports.

Best For: Very small or solo consultants who need a no-cost CRM with basic deal and contact management, minimal automation needs, and are okay with a single pipeline and limited custom properties.

2. HubSpot Starter

  1. Contacts & Companies
    • Still no strict upper limit on contact storage, but Starter allows a higher monthly marketing email send limit (often around 5,000 or more).
    • You pay a base fee for 1,000 marketing contacts, then additional marketing contact blocks if you surpass that.
  2. Deals & Pipelines
    • Can create multiple deal pipelines in many cases, though some older documentation might suggest only one. Recently, Starter typically supports 2 or more pipelines, but you’ll want to confirm.
    • Basic deal stage customization is still available.
  3. Custom Properties
    • 1,000 custom properties per object becomes available, overriding the 10-property limit in Free. This is a major upgrade for those needing structured data fields.
    • This means each object (Contacts, Companies, Deals) can have up to 1,000 custom properties.
  4. Custom Pipelines & Stages
    • More freedom to create multiple pipelines (for different lines of service) and define unique stages.
    • You can rename or reorder them. Some advanced pipeline automation may still be limited.
  5. Tasks
    • Similar to Free, but you get more robust usage. Still no advanced workflows to auto-create tasks, but you can do manual tasks or set sequences (some limitations).
  6. Workflow Automation
    • Basic or limited automation—Marketing Hub Starter or Sales Starter do allow single-step follow-up or short Sequences. However, the full Workflow builder (with branching logic) is reserved for Professional.
    • Email sequences are available in Sales Starter, but with limited enrollments.
  7. Max Marketing Email Sends
    • Increased from Free. Typically, Starter’s monthly send limit grows with the number of marketing contacts you purchase.
  8. Other
    • Basic support, some reporting improvements, but no custom reporting dashboards or advanced analytics.

Best For: Small consulting teams who need more than Free’s limited custom properties, want multiple pipelines, and do some basic lead nurturing or sales sequences—but don’t need the advanced automation or reporting of Professional.

3. HubSpot Professional

  1. Contacts & Marketing Contacts
    • Typically unlimited contact storage with a base tier of marketing contacts. You can upgrade blocks of marketing contacts as you grow.
    • No major “send limit” constraints, just a monthly marketing contact allotment. You can do robust email campaigns.
  2. Deals & Pipelines
    • Unlimited or high number of pipelines, each with custom stages.
    • You can set advanced pipeline automation (e.g., moving a deal to the next stage triggers a task or sends an internal email).
  3. Custom Properties
    • Up to 1,000 custom properties per object, same as Starter, but you have more advanced property features.
    • Optionally you can do custom-coded fields or advanced property usage via workflows.
  4. Custom Pipelines & Stages
    • No real restrictions, multiple pipelines for different processes.
    • You can automate stage changes (Professional tier includes custom workflow actions).
  5. Tasks
    • You can automatically create tasks in workflows. E.g., once a deal moves to “Proposal Sent,” generate a follow-up task 7 days later.
  6. Workflow Automation
    • Full multi-step workflows with branching logic, triggers, and advanced actions.
    • Automate contact lifecycle stage changes, internal notifications, or cross-object updates.
    • Sales sequences with higher enroll limits.
    • Marketing automation for lead nurturing, as well as service-based workflows if you also have Service Hub.
  7. Reporting & Analytics
    • Custom Reports, advanced dashboards, revenue attribution, and more.
    • Greater analytics depth (especially if you also have Marketing or Service Pro).
  8. Other Key Features
    • Teams and Permissions: If you have a small group, you can better define who sees which records.
    • Call Intelligence (with add-ons): Auto-call transcripts or conversation insights.
    • 24/7 Support typically.

Best For: Consultants with more sophisticated automation needs—e.g., robust lead nurturing, detailed pipeline automations, advanced reporting. Typically recommended if you rely heavily on inbound marketing, sales automation, or data-driven processes.

4. HubSpot Enterprise

  • Enterprise tiers include everything in Professional plus scalable features: advanced team permissions, partitioning, multi-touch revenue attribution, custom objects, advanced analytics, etc.
  • Often more relevant for larger agencies or consultants with complex organizational structures or specialized data requirements.
