There is a French word, le dépaysement, which describes the refreshing change of scenery experienced when being away from one’s usual surroundings.
Literally “de-countrification,” it can range from mild culture shock to the exhilaration of being in a foreign place.
It’s the opposite of being homesick; I can’t think of an equivalent word in English that captures the wonderful thrill of novelty and alertness one can experience while traveling in an unfamiliar place.
You don’t need to travel to a different country to experience le dépaysement.
Go to a concert featuring a musical genre you don’t normally listen to.
Eat dinner in a neighborhood you haven’t visited.
Walk a different route to the subway.
Learn to identify something (urban weeds, brick patterns, advertising fonts) you normally ignore.
