SA (SAFe Agilist): Certification Requirements, Exam, Cost, and Professional Value

1. What Is SA?

SA stands for SAFe Agilist, a foundational professional certification awarded by Scaled Agile, Inc. It recognizes knowledge of the Scaled Agile Framework, or SAFe, for coordinating Agile work across teams and connecting delivery with organizational strategy. Its intended audience includes current and aspiring leaders. The current entry offering incorporates AI-related content and is branded AI-Empowered SAFe Agilist.

Candidates earn the credential by passing an examination. They may complete the associated Leading SAFe course or purchase a proctored examination without taking that course. Training attendance alone does not confer certification.

For hiring purposes, the letters should indicate an assessed foundation in SAFe, not proven transformation leadership. SA is a private certification rather than a degree or occupational license. Its assessment does not establish that the holder has successfully implemented SAFe in a working organization.

3. Who Awards and Oversees the Credential?

Scaled Agile, Inc. owns SAFe and operates its professional certification program. Authorized training partners deliver Leading SAFe courses, but the certification itself is awarded by Scaled Agile, not independently by the instructor or training company. SAFe Studio provides access to learning plans, examinations, and certification records.

Scaled Agile controls examination requirements, candidate conduct rules, certification use, and program changes. Its appeals policy covers scoring, administration, procedural fairness, and misconduct complaints. Appeals generally must be submitted within 30 days of the examination or decision. Complaints about certified individuals can lead to disciplinary action, including revocation.

A training provider’s authorization should not be confused with independent accreditation of the credential. Likewise, one employee’s SA certification does not certify the employer’s delivery methods or confer Scaled Agile partner status on the firm. The candidate agreement expressly defines certification as an individual achievement.

4. When and Why Was the Credential Created?

SAFe developed from work on applying Lean thinking and Agile development beyond individual teams. Dean Leffingwell’s 2011 book, Agile Software Requirements, contained an early version of the framework’s “Big Picture.” The underlying problem was organizational: improving team-level development was insufficient when funding, coordination, and management practices remained disconnected.

Scaled Agile identifies May 25, 2012, as the date of its first SAFe Program Consultant certification class. That was an SPC milestone, not a verified first award date for SAFe Agilist. A contemporaneous October 2013 training announcement explicitly offered Leading SAFe with SAFe Agilist certification, establishing that SA existed by then.

Subsequent changes followed the framework’s evolution. SAFe 6.0 launched on March 15, 2023, with revised courses and certifications emphasizing business agility and flow. The current SA assessment also includes AI-related knowledge. These revisions explain why an older certificate’s version and the holder’s subsequent learning matter alongside its original award date.

5. Who Pursues the Credential, and Where Is It Used?

Scaled Agile specifically targets executives, directors, product managers, and Agile coaches. The credential is an introduction to coordinating organizational delivery rather than a specialist qualification in one team role. An experienced manager may therefore pursue a foundational SA certification without being early in their career.

Documented applications include banking, telecommunications, and technology delivery. In an issuer-published Standard Bank case study, a division CIO earned SA certification before an initial large-scale planning event. Scaled Agile’s Telia Finland case study describes employees earning SA and SPC credentials during a broader transformation. These are examples of organizational use, not independent proof that certification caused the reported business results.

The associated work includes aligning team plans, identifying dependencies, discussing delivery priorities, and connecting development investments to strategic objectives. PI Planning brings teams and stakeholders together around shared objectives; Lean Portfolio Management addresses strategy, funding, and governance.

For consulting staffing, that knowledge can be relevant to IT operating model redesign, particularly where an assignment changes team boundaries and coordination mechanisms. This is a substantive knowledge match, not evidence that every SA holder can design an operating model independently.

Employer preference is separate from credential eligibility. For example, Accenture has listed SAFe Agilist among preferred certifications for an engineering-platform integration role while separately requiring practical delivery and technical skills.

6. What Knowledge and Skills Does It Cover?

The AI-Empowered SA examination addresses six broad areas. Candidates should prepare against the release-specific study guide assigned to their learning plan rather than assuming older SAFe 5 or SAFe 6 materials are interchangeable.

  • Business agility: Understanding why organizations adopt Lean-Agile ways of working and how SAFe supports adaptation.
  • Leadership principles: Applying the Lean-Agile mindset, organizational values, systems thinking, and decision principles.
  • Teams and technical quality: Understanding cross-functional teams, Agile Release Trains, built-in quality, and continuous delivery.
  • Product flow and planning: Connecting customer needs to prioritized work and participating in planning and execution.
  • Portfolio decisions: Relating strategy to portfolio priorities, funding boundaries, and the movement of major initiatives.
  • Change and AI: Leading through example and understanding how AI can support leadership and Agile work.

An Agile Release Train, or ART, coordinates multiple teams around shared delivery objectives. PI Planning is its recurring collaborative planning event. Understanding these mechanisms supports discussion of capacity, dependencies, risks, and achievable commitments, rather than simply collecting separate team schedules.

Applied capabilities

Illustrative applications include helping banking technology teams surface dependencies before a shared release, or helping a portfolio group distinguish strategic investment decisions from individual project approvals. These examples connect the framework’s planning and portfolio concepts to possible work assignments; they are not practical exercises that every credential holder has necessarily completed.

Boundaries

The appropriate interpretation is knowledge coverage. A multiple-choice examination is not a live assessment of facilitation, software architecture, engineering quality, or organizational change delivery. Similarly, AI-related examination content should not be interpreted as proof of model-development expertise or successful deployment of AI systems.

7. What Are the Eligibility Requirements?

SA does not impose a formal degree, minimum number of professional years, prior certification, or documented project portfolio as an entry prerequisite. Scaled Agile describes its courses as having no prerequisites, apart from specified advanced exceptions that do not apply to SA. Candidates should distinguish useful background knowledge from mandatory admission conditions.

Course route

A candidate registers for Leading SAFe with an authorized provider and completes the course. The provider records attendance, enabling examination access through the learning plan. Taking an unrelated Agile course does not automatically create this course-based examination entitlement.

Exam-only route

SA is explicitly eligible for a separately purchased proctored examination without completion of the associated course. Consequently, statements that Leading SAFe attendance is universally mandatory no longer describe all available routes.

All candidates must provide accurate registration information and accept the Candidate Agreement. Proctored candidates also need valid photo identification and a suitable testing environment. Testing accommodations should be requested before scheduling where necessary.

Language selection needs attention. A course delivered verbally in a particular language does not necessarily include translated courseware or an examination in that language. Confirm the exact offering before enrollment, especially when comparing legacy and updated materials.

For a newcomer, eligibility should not be confused with readiness. A sensible preparation decision is to assess familiarity with Agile teams, product delivery, and organizational coordination before choosing an examination date.

8. How Do You Earn the Credential?

  1. Select the route. Enroll in Leading SAFe or purchase the SA proctored examination. Both lead to an assessed credential, not an attendance-only award.
  2. Set up your account. For the course route, the provider adds you to its roster and sends account instructions. After attendance is confirmed, the examination becomes available in SAFe Studio.
  3. Prepare against the correct learning plan. Review the relevant materials and practice assessment. The practice test is preparation, not a substitute for the certification examination.
  4. Arrange testing. The exam-only route requires a scheduled appointment with a live proctor. Purchase does not guarantee immediate or same-day testing. Complete the required equipment checks before the appointment.
  5. Complete the examination. The current SA assessment has 45 single-select multiple-choice questions, a 90-minute limit, and an 80% passing score, equivalent to 36 correct answers. Unanswered questions are incorrect.
  6. Receive the award. Results are available after testing. Successful candidates can access their certification record and claim the associated digital badge.

The examination is closed-book and must be completed independently. Notes, published materials, other people, and outside assistance are prohibited. Proctored testing adds identity verification and monitoring; course-linked unproctored testing is not permission to consult resources.

Leading SAFe offerings include English and translated options such as French, German, Japanese, Korean, Simplified Chinese, Spanish, and Brazilian Portuguese. Confirm that the particular examination release and purchase route support your chosen language.

Under the Foundational policy effective April 14, 2026, two attempts are included within 60 days. The SA-specific schedule permits the third attempt immediately after the second unsuccessful attempt, the fourth after 10 days, and the fifth after 30 days. Later attempts require 30-day waits. Purchased retakes have their own 60-day window.

Complete testing before the entitlement expires. Scaled Agile’s current general examination guidance states that extensions are no longer offered and that a missed window requires a retake purchase.

9. How Long Does It Take, and How Do Candidates Prepare?

Prerequisite-building time: There is no mandatory multi-year experience period for SA. Leading SAFe is commonly offered as a two-day class, although the provider’s actual timetable governs. The exam-only route removes classroom attendance, not the need to learn the material.

Preparation time: A universal study-hour estimate would be misleading. A delivery leader already working with ARTs may need less conceptual preparation than someone encountering enterprise Agile for the first time. Plan around demonstrated understanding rather than a promised number of days.

Official preparation resources: Scaled Agile recommends reviewing course materials, studying beyond the workbook, and using practice assessments to identify gaps. A useful approach is to explain why a practice answer is appropriate, then apply the concept to a real work situation. Repeatedly memorizing answers is weaker preparation than understanding the distinctions being tested.

Administrative time: Allow time for roster confirmation or proctor availability, equipment checks, and any accommodation request. Do not schedule preparation so tightly that a technical problem consumes the entire examination window.

10. How Much Does the Credential Cost?

The following US-dollar figures apply as of September 25, 2026, before applicable taxes. Initial cost depends primarily on whether the candidate purchases training or uses the exam-only route.

  • Exam-only initial cost: US$495 plus tax, including two proctored attempts within 60 days. A first-attempt pass therefore costs US$495 plus tax, excluding optional preparation.
  • Course route: Providers set tuition. The registration includes the applicable initial examination attempts. Confirm the complete package rather than comparing tuition and examination prices as though both must always be purchased separately.
  • Additional attempts: Additional unproctored SA attempts normally cost US$50. For proctored testing, the current dedicated guidance requires a new US$495 purchase after both included attempts are unsuccessful.
  • Renewal: The Foundational renewal tier costs US$195 annually plus applicable tax and covers the Foundational certifications already held.

Optional expenses can include supplementary instruction, books, travel, and time away from work. Ask the provider to identify cancellation terms, included materials, and Studio access in writing. These purchasing questions are particularly important when comparing discounted courses with examination-only offers.

The course route grants first-time learners a year of platform access after completion. Candidates should not assume every separately purchased examination package has identical access benefits without checking its terms. Proctored appointments should normally be cancelled or rescheduled at least 24 hours ahead to avoid late-cancellation consequences.

11. How Do Holders Maintain the Credential?

SA requires annual maintenance. Holders should check the expiration date shown in their Studio certification record rather than assuming that the original certificate proves continuing active status. Renewal is administered through Studio and does not ordinarily require repeating the certification examination.

The current continuing-development requirement is 12 continuing education units, or CEUs, each year. Scaled Agile defines a CEU as one hour of relevant development. Activities fall into Learning, Community, and Professional Application categories; participation in at least two categories is encouraged rather than stated as universally mandatory.

Keep an activity log and supporting evidence because CEU claims may be audited. Relevant activities can count toward multiple SAFe certifications, and excess CEUs may be carried into the next renewal period under the issuer’s guidance.

The US$195 Foundational tier renews the Foundational credentials already held. A holder renewing through an applicable higher tier may also have SA covered; payment does not award additional credentials that the person has never earned.

Expired status is different from disciplinary suspension or revocation. Scaled Agile states that ordinary renewal does not involve late fees or examination retakes. Misconduct is governed separately by program rules and can result in loss of certification.

12. What Is Its Professional Value, and What Are Its Limitations?

SA’s most defensible value is as a common knowledge baseline for work in a SAFe environment. It can help establish that a professional has studied an organization’s planning, coordination, and leadership vocabulary. Its practical relevance is therefore strongest when the assignment actually uses those mechanisms.

Employer recognition exists, but it should be interpreted precisely. An Accenture product-and-platform engineering consultant posting in India lists SAFe Agilist among certifications that provide an advantage. The same posting separately seeks transformation experience, analytical ability, stakeholder skills, and practical tool knowledge. That is evidence of credential relevance, not evidence that SA substitutes for those capabilities or is universally required.

For a professional considering the credential, a useful decision test is whether it supports a specific role, employer requirement, or assignment. Pursuing it solely for an assumed salary premium is a weaker rationale. The learning may be worthwhile without producing an immediate promotion, and a promotion after certification does not by itself establish causation.

For clients, the distinction between knowing a framework and improving delivery is central. SA assesses framework knowledge through an examination; it does not require an independently evaluated record of operational results. Treat claims about reduced lead time, improved predictability, or successful organizational redesign as separate claims requiring evidence.

The credential may be less useful for an assignment centered on a different delivery approach, deep engineering specialization, or industry regulation. This is a fit assessment, not a judgment that the underlying Lean-Agile concepts have no broader application.

13. What Should Employers and Clients Infer from It?

What it establishes

A current holder has satisfied Scaled Agile’s certification assessment and applicable ongoing obligations. Because an exam-only route exists, do not automatically infer classroom attendance. Because SA has no experience prerequisite, do not infer years of implementation work.

What still requires evaluation

Assess delivery history, industry knowledge, facilitation, commercial judgment, and stakeholder management independently. For a banking transformation, ask for banking delivery evidence. For a complex technology program, ask how the candidate handled architecture dependencies, suppliers, and competing priorities. Certification should inform these inquiries, not close them.

Where it can matter in staffing

A reasonable staffing application is an IT transformation program management workstream involving coordination across teams and leadership. SA knowledge may help the person participate effectively, but ownership of the whole transformation requires a broader delivery assessment.

Evidence to request

Request nonconfidential examples of planning outputs, dependency decisions, portfolio recommendations, or improvement measures. Ask the candidate to distinguish personal contributions from team results and to explain the baseline, measurement period, and trade-offs behind claimed improvements.

Three questions to assess applied competence

  1. “During PI Planning, two teams depend on an integration that will not be ready. How would you help them revise the plan?” A useful answer addresses capacity, sequencing, risk ownership, and transparent objectives rather than merely escalating the deadline.
  2. “How would you explain Lean portfolio funding to a sponsor who wants every team funded through separate annual projects?” Look for a distinction between strategic investment controls and delivery flexibility, with a practical transition approach.
  3. “An AI tool proposes backlog priorities from incomplete customer data. What would you validate before acting?” Look for attention to assumptions, data quality, confidentiality, human review, and customer value.

These are suggested interview prompts, not examination questions. Also verify any claimed teaching authorization separately: an individual SA certification does not establish that the person or firm is authorized to deliver official SAFe training.

  • SAFe Scrum Master, or SSM: A role-focused alternative or complement for team facilitation, impediment removal, and coordination within an ART. It is also foundational and has a 45-question, 90-minute examination. Choose it for Scrum Master responsibilities rather than assuming SA provides the same role depth.
  • SAFe Product Owner/Product Manager, or POPM: A more targeted option for backlog decisions, customer needs, and product execution. It is examination-based and offers a proctored route without mandatory course attendance. It complements SA’s wider organizational perspective rather than representing an automatic next level.
  • SAFe Practice Consultant, or SPC: A separate implementation and training-oriented credential. Earning it involves the full Implementing SAFe course and an examination. Holding SA does not waive the course. Teaching particular courses also requires the relevant enablement; SA alone does not provide this authorization.
  • PMI Agile Certified Practitioner, or PMI-ACP: A framework-agnostic alternative from the Project Management Institute. Unlike SA, it has education, training, and experience-related eligibility routes. Its standard experience route requires two years of Agile experience within five years, with alternatives available. The examination contains 120 questions over three hours.

These are professional certifications rather than jurisdiction-specific practice licenses. For selection purposes, compare the work being staffed: organizational alignment, team facilitation, product ownership, implementation training, or broader Agile practice. There is no universal credential sequence that makes SA the mandatory starting point for every role.

15. How Can You Verify the Credential and Use Its Letters Correctly?

Ask the holder for their issuer-backed digital badge and current certification details. Scaled Agile uses Credly for shareable badges whose metadata describes the issuer, achievement, and earning requirements. Verify the live record rather than relying only on an image pasted into a résumé.

Check the person’s identity, exact credential name, version or upgrade designation, and current status. A Leading SAFe course-completion certificate is not the same evidence as an SA certification record. Holders can access certification documents in Studio; downloading a certificate requires active status.

Studio also provides a Certification Directory. Participation depends on the holder’s sharing choices, and Scaled Agile treats certification information as private. Therefore, absence from the directory is not proof of a false claim. Ask the individual to provide an alternative issuer-generated record.

Use the full credential name where clarity matters. “SA” alone is easily misunderstood outside a SAFe context. Identify the actual designation shown in the holder’s record rather than silently upgrading an older award to newer branding.

Scaled Agile grants the right to use a certification after successful examination notification and only while it remains active and in good standing. Candidates must not present themselves as certified merely because they enrolled. Former holders should distinguish a historical achievement from a current credential and follow the issuer’s usage guidance.

16. Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need five years of experience to earn SA?

No formal five-year experience requirement applies to SA. Experience may improve learning and practical usefulness, but it should not be confused with eligibility. Employers can still require substantial delivery experience for a role held by an SA-certified candidate.

Can I earn SA without taking Leading SAFe?

Yes. Scaled Agile permits candidates to purchase a proctored SA examination without completing the course. You must still pass the assessment. Self-study is an alternative preparation route, not an exemption from examination or conduct requirements.

Does SA authorize me to teach official SAFe courses?

No. Official course-delivery authorization belongs to a separate pathway involving the appropriate consultant credential and course enablement. Knowing the material, earning SA, and being authorized to deliver licensed training are different things.

Must I retake the examination if my certification expires?

Scaled Agile’s ordinary renewal guidance says examination retakes and late fees are not required. Restore the relevant renewal tier and satisfy current maintenance obligations. Expiration should not be confused with disciplinary revocation, which is governed separately.

Is an older SAFe Agilist credential automatically obsolete?

No. Check whether it is active and which version the holder actually earned or upgraded. Scaled Agile states that the AI-Native upgrade is optional and that SAFe without that upgrade continues to be supported. Version and current status are separate questions.

17. Official Resources and Recent Changes

Official resources: Scaled Agile provides examination study guides, practice assessments, candidate policies, accommodation guidance, renewal instructions, CEU guidance, and certification-sharing tools. Use the learning plan associated with the actual examination purchase or enrollment.

Examination change: The Foundational policy effective April 14, 2026, introduced two included attempts within a 60-day window. Older descriptions of one included attempt or a universal 30-day window should not be applied to current purchases without checking their terms.

AI-Native upgrade: Guidance dated August 24, 2026, allows active SAFe certifications to be upgraded at no additional charge. The regular pathway takes approximately 2.5 hours and includes learning activities and an open-book quiz. It is optional, preserves prior credentials, and does not extend their expiration dates. This upgrade assessment is distinct from the initial closed-book SA examination.

This profile is an independent Umbrex reference and is not issued or endorsed by the credential owner unless an explicit relationship is stated.
