CTP: Certified Treasury Professional (AFP)

1. What Is CTP?

CTP stands for Certified Treasury Professional, an individual professional certification awarded by the Association for Financial Professionals (AFP). It recognizes broad knowledge of corporate treasury, including cash management, liquidity, financing, financial risk, banking relationships, and treasury operations. It is intended for professionals responsible for these activities or providing related financial services.

Earning the credential requires passing one examination, satisfying AFP’s experience requirements or approved education and teaching substitutions, and agreeing to its ethical standards. Continuing professional development is required to maintain certification. Completing a preparation course alone does not earn the designation.

For an employer or client, CTP should indicate an assessed treasury knowledge base and an accepted eligibility pathway. It should not be interpreted as proof that the holder has personally performed every treasury activity, implemented a particular system, or managed a treasury department.

2. CTP at a Glance

Full name: Certified Treasury Professional.
Abbreviation: CTP.
Credential type: Professional certification.
Awarding organization: Association for Financial Professionals.
Official website: AFP Certified Treasury Professional.

First introduced: 1986 as Certified Cash Manager; transitioned to CTP in 2003.
Current status: Active, with a 2026-2028 examination specification.
Professional focus: Corporate treasury and cash management.
Intended career stage: Early-career professionals with qualifying experience through experienced practitioners.
Geographic scope: International, administered by a U.S.-based professional association.

Main eligibility requirement: Normally two years of qualifying full-time work, with approved substitutions.
Assessment: One 170-question multiple-choice examination, with 3.5 hours of testing.
Indicative initial cost: Remaining 2026B registration fees range from US$925 to US$1,420 by membership category; preparation costs extra.
Maintenance: 36 continuing education credits every three years, reporting, and a fee.
Verification: AFP confirmation, with authorization required for third-party background checks.

3. Who Awards and Oversees the Credential?

AFP owns and administers the CTP program. Its Certification Committee determines eligibility, considers exceptional-circumstance appeals, and serves as the final technical authority on examination questions and answers. AFP can audit applications and continuing education submissions.

Pearson administers the computer-based examination through its testing-center network. It is the examination delivery provider, not the organization awarding the credential. Training providers may help candidates prepare, but their course-completion certificates are not substitutes for AFP certification.

AFP develops the examination with practicing treasury professionals and testing specialists. Its process uses job analysis, examination specifications, question development, and statistical review, with a major update every three years. Following professional testing standards should not be confused with government licensing or a separate claim of accreditation.

4. When and Why Was the Credential Created?

The program began in 1986 as the Certified Cash Manager (CCM). Its origins were in establishing a common professional knowledge standard for people managing organizational cash and related financial responsibilities. Pearson’s AFP program history explicitly identifies CCM as the original designation.

Three milestones explain the credential’s present form:

  • 1986: The certification program was introduced under AFP’s predecessor organization.
  • 2003: CCM was phased into the Certified Treasury Professional designation.
  • June-July 2026: A revised body of knowledge entered examination use, supported by Essentials of Treasury Management, Eighth Edition and the 2026-2028 test specifications.

The broader treasury name fits the current coverage: cash operations remain central, but the examination also addresses capital structure, financing, risk, technology, and internal advisory responsibilities. Historical CCM holders and newly awarded CTPs should therefore not be treated as having taken an identical examination at the same point in time.

5. Who Pursues the Credential, and Where Is It Used?

CTP is relevant to treasury analysts, cash managers, treasury managers, assistant treasurers, corporate finance professionals, and financial-services employees supporting corporate cash and payments. AFP’s intended audience extends beyond employees whose job title contains “treasury”: qualifying employment may be in another corporate finance role.

Employer use is visible in actual recruitment requirements. East West Bank has listed CTP as preferred for treasury relationship management positions, while TIAA has listed it among preferred qualifications for a treasury analyst role involving cash, liquidity, banking, and systems. These examples demonstrate employer preference, not a universal requirement across finance jobs.

The subject matter is relevant across industries. Illustrative applications include financing seasonal inventory in manufacturing or retail, managing foreign-currency receipts for exporters, and coordinating cash across multiple operating entities. These are applications of the assessed treasury disciplines, not evidence that every holder has worked in those settings.

For consulting assignments, CTP can be a useful screening credential for treasury and cash management support, particularly cash forecasting, bank-account rationalization, and treasury controls. The staffing decision should still depend on the person’s delivery record and the assignment’s complexity.

6. What Knowledge and Skills Does It Cover?

The current framework has five knowledge domains. AFP publishes question-count ranges rather than a single fixed percentage for each domain:

  • Corporate liquidity, 56-60 questions: Cash positioning, forecasting, short-term investing and borrowing, banking structures, foreign exchange, trade finance, and intercompany funding. These topics support decisions about meeting obligations and placing surplus funds.
  • Capital structure and long-term capital, 34-38 questions: Debt and equity, credit agreements, investments, financing conditions, transactions, and hedging. This supports evaluating funding choices and their consequences.
  • Internal and external relationships, 13-17 questions: Banking relationships, account administration, provider selection, and internal coordination. This supports managing financial services and advising business stakeholders.
  • Financial, regulatory, and operational risk, 24-28 questions: Policies, controls, fraud, counterparties, continuity, merchant services, and compliance. This supports identifying exposures and establishing appropriate safeguards.
  • Treasury technology, 15-17 questions: Treasury and enterprise systems, implementation, information security, and technology-related risks, including artificial intelligence. This supports assessing technology’s operational benefits and control implications.

These are the published 2026-2028 ranges; older examination outlines contain different allocations.

Applied capabilities

Illustrative work connected to this knowledge includes:

  • Building a rolling cash forecast that separates expected receipts, scheduled payments, financing availability, and minimum cash needs.
  • Evaluating a manufacturer’s banking arrangements against its operating footprint, transaction volumes, and foreign-currency exposures.
  • Drafting an investment policy that distinguishes liquidity requirements, permitted instruments, counterparty limits, and approval responsibilities.

These examples translate the syllabus into possible assignments; they are not practical exercises that every candidate must submit.

Boundaries

The assessment is not a live dealing exercise, system implementation, client presentation, or reviewed portfolio. Employers should separately assess execution experience, accounting specialization, local regulatory knowledge, and the ability to make decisions under incomplete information.

7. What Are the Eligibility Requirements?

The standard route requires two years of full-time, career-based employment in cash management, treasury, or corporate finance. A bachelor’s degree is not mandatory for this route. Internships, holiday employment, and volunteer positions do not count toward the full-time employment requirement.

AFP allows education and teaching substitutions. Its eligibility matrix provides these combinations:

  • Two years of qualifying professional work, without a degree requirement.
  • One year of qualifying work plus an eligible graduate degree in business, finance, or accountancy.
  • One year of qualifying work plus two years of full-time college or university teaching in a finance-related subject.
  • An eligible graduate degree plus two years of qualifying teaching.
  • Four years of qualifying teaching without the employment or graduate-degree components.

The teaching substitution is two years of qualifying teaching for each year of professional work replaced. Academic applicants should document the teaching subject and full-time status clearly.

Applicants complete a Report of Experience and/or Education. A graduate-degree substitution requires a transcript or degree copy. AFP may audit eligibility; its support guidance says a supervisor or HR contact is contacted if the application is selected for audit, with advance notice to the applicant.

Candidates may take the examination before completing the experience and education requirements, but must satisfy everything within six consecutive testing windows. Passing the examination alone is insufficient for the final award. Prior AFP membership is not required, and every candidate must pass the examination regardless of other experience or credentials.

8. How Do You Earn the Credential?

Apply and document eligibility

Select a testing window, complete AFP’s online application, provide the required experience or education information, and pay the applicable fees. Candidates also agree to AFP’s ethical and examination rules. Application approval and earning the credential are separate stages.

Receive authorization and schedule the examination

After approval, AFP issues an Authorization to Test. The candidate then books a Pearson appointment. Testing normally takes place during June-July and December-January windows. The name on the authorization must match acceptable identification. Candidates needing testing accommodations should submit supporting documentation through the prescribed application process.

Complete the assessment

The examination contains 170 multiple-choice questions, including 20 unscored questions used in examination development. Candidates have 3.5 hours to answer questions within a four-hour appointment that also accommodates a tutorial and survey.

Testing is computer-based and closed-book. AFP prohibits bringing reference materials or a personal calculator into the testing room; an on-screen calculator is provided. Candidates can mark questions for review and change answers before finishing. There is no separate dissertation, oral examination, or workplace project.

Meet the passing standard

AFP reports scaled scores from 200 to 500, with 300 as the passing score. This does not mean 60% correct. The raw number of correct answers needed can vary with examination difficulty. Passing candidates receive a pass result rather than a numerical score; unsuccessful candidates receive a score and domain-level diagnostics.

Results are normally available after testing. The first administration of a new body of knowledge is an exception because AFP must complete additional analysis before releasing results. This applied to the June-July 2026 window.

Complete any remaining requirements

Certification follows only when all requirements are satisfied. Unsuccessful candidates can re-register for a later window within their application’s validity period. After six consecutive windows, a new application and the applicable new-applicant fees are required.

9. How Long Does It Take, and How Do Candidates Prepare?

Prerequisite-building time: The standard employment route takes two years of qualifying work. Approved substitutions change that pathway, and study can overlap with accumulating experience. This is different from saying that examination preparation takes two years.

Preparation time: There is no single defensible study-hour estimate for all candidates. A useful plan begins with a diagnostic review, then allocates time to unfamiliar domains and timed practice. A cash-management specialist, for example, should not assume equal readiness for capital structure or technology questions.

Official resources: Current preparation centers on Essentials of Treasury Management, Eighth Edition and AFP’s updated Exam Prep Platform. The platform includes reading, videos, knowledge checks, practice examinations, and progress tracking. Candidates can choose self-study or instructor-supported preparation.

Administrative time: Application approval, testing-window availability, and appointment booking must fit the plan. Registering does not automatically reserve a testing seat. Build the schedule around an actual appointment rather than only the registration deadline.

10. How Much Does the Credential Cost?

The following are AFP’s published U.S.-dollar prices as of September 25, 2026. For the December 1, 2026-January 31, 2027 window, early registration closed September 23, 2026; the final application deadline is October 28, 2026.

Mandatory initial fees

  • AFP individual member: $925 early or $1,025 by the final deadline.
  • AFP corporate member: $825 early or $925 by the final deadline.
  • Nonmember: $1,320 early or $1,420 by the final deadline, including one year of AFP membership.

These are application and examination prices, not all-inclusive preparation packages. Existing-member prices assume membership is already in place.

Optional preparation

The eighth-edition textbook costs $195 for members or $295 for nonmembers, plus applicable shipping and tax. The Exam Prep Platform costs $910 for individual members, $810 for corporate members, or $1,010 for nonmembers. Instructor-led preparation can add further costs.

Illustrative first-attempt total: An existing individual member registering by the final deadline and buying only the textbook would pay $1,220, excluding existing membership dues, shipping, tax, and travel. A new nonmember’s examination-only registration is $1,420 at that deadline.

Retakes and ongoing costs

Re-examination or re-registration costs $250. AFP lists a $95 no-show penalty. Approved emergency deferrals can be free, but ordinary changes to a later window should not be assumed to qualify.

Timely online recertification costs $85 for members or $200 for nonmembers. Reporting after August 15, through October 15, costs $135 or $250 respectively. Paper reporting adds $25. Continuing education may create additional costs.

11. How Do Holders Maintain the Credential?

CTP requires 36 eligible continuing education credits during each three-year cycle, submission of those credits, and payment of the recertification fee. AFP aligns cycles to July 1-June 30 rather than simply counting three years from the precise examination date. Holders should follow the cycle shown in their AFP record.

Credits must ordinarily be earned by June 30 of the reporting year. August 15 is the normal reporting deadline; October 15 is the later reporting deadline. The later reporting date does not itself extend the time available to earn credits.

Eligible activities can include relevant professional education, approved independent study, teaching, presentations, and other categories subject to AFP’s limits. Activities need not always be AFP-sponsored. Holders should retain evidence of participation and check category rules rather than assuming any finance-related activity qualifies.

AFP provides several status arrangements:

  • Extension: Eligible applicants may request additional time, through December 15, to complete outstanding credits.
  • Inactive: Approved status can last up to five years; the designation cannot be used while inactive.
  • Retired: Approved permanent retirees use the retired designation rather than ordinary CTP letters.
  • Revoked: Failure to complete renewal can remove authorization to use the credential. Reinstatement appeals must be submitted within two years of the relevant cycle end.

These are formal AFP statuses, not labels holders can assign themselves.

AFP membership is not required to retain certification. Ethical obligations include competence, confidentiality, integrity, and compliance with applicable professional responsibilities.

12. What Is Its Professional Value, and What Are Its Limitations?

CTP’s practical value is strongest when an employer needs evidence of broad treasury knowledge beyond one person’s current job description. It can give a hiring team a common reference point for discussing liquidity, funding, banking, and controls. This is a professional interpretation of the assessed content, not a guarantee of performance.

AFP reports that more than 38,000 professionals in 76 countries have earned the credential. That is an issuer-reported cumulative figure, not a count of currently active holders. It demonstrates reach but does not establish equal recognition in every employment market.

Employer advertisements provide more specific evidence. East West Bank’s treasury relationship manager requirements combine a preference for CTP with substantial treasury and payments experience, communication skills, and business-development capability. TIAA’s treasury analyst posting separately identified registration requirements and preferred CTP status. This illustrates why a certification should not be confused with all the qualifications needed for a role.

For a professional considering CTP, a useful decision test is whether the syllabus addresses likely responsibilities or gaps. Its value may be lower for someone focused exclusively on tax compliance, external audit, or a narrow software specialty.

Do not budget on an assumed salary increase. Assess examination and preparation costs, study time, employer support, and the credential’s relevance to target positions. Likewise, do not use CTP as a substitute for references, work samples, or evidence of results.

13. What Should Employers and Clients Infer From It?

What the credential establishes

A current holder has passed AFP’s treasury examination, met an approved employment, education, or teaching pathway, and remains subject to maintenance and ethical obligations. Importantly, the eligibility routes do not mean every holder has two years of direct operational treasury employment.

What still needs evaluation

Determine whether the person has handled the relevant currencies, entities, transaction volumes, financing arrangements, and systems. Assess leadership, communication, commercial judgment, and implementation discipline separately. A CTP held by one consultant is an individual qualification, not accreditation of the consulting firm.

Where it matters in staffing

Use it as one input when staffing cash forecasting, liquidity reviews, bank-service evaluation, treasury-policy development, or finance-system workstreams. For a manufacturer’s working-capital project, for example, distinguish treasury funding expertise from the operational ability to change inventory, customer collections, or supplier processes.

Evidence to request

Useful nonconfidential evidence includes an anonymized forecast with variance analysis, a treasury-policy extract, a bank-fee comparison, or a controls matrix. Ask the candidate to distinguish personal responsibility from team output and explain measurable results without disclosing client information.

Three questions to assess applied competence

  • Your 13-week cash forecast repeatedly overstates available liquidity. How would you diagnose the errors and improve it? A useful answer distinguishes timing errors, missing obligations, restricted cash, data ownership, and scenario assumptions.
  • A manufacturer has foreign-currency receivables and floating-rate debt. How would you develop a hedging recommendation? A useful answer separates exposures, explains policy limits and alternatives, and considers forecast uncertainty, costs, and implementation controls.
  • After an acquisition, duplicate bank accounts and outdated payment permissions remain. What would you prioritize? A useful answer addresses signer authority, payment access, reconciliations, fraud exposure, and business continuity before pursuing account consolidation.

FPAC: A complementary corporate-finance specialization

AFP’s Certified Corporate FP&A Professional focuses on planning, forecasting, analysis, and business partnering rather than treasury operations. Its routes generally require degree-level education and two or three years of qualifying FP&A experience. It has two examination-part requirements. An active CTP can apply for a Part I waiver, but must still meet FPAC eligibility and pass Part II. This is a documented exemption, not automatic conversion.

The Association of Corporate Treasurers’ Diploma addresses treasury at senior operational and managerial levels through unit examinations and a dissertation. Completion makes a person eligible for Associate membership and the AMCT letters. Entry normally follows prior treasury study or an approved alternative route. ACT explicitly permits CTP holders with five years of treasury experience to enter the Diploma without completing its Certificate in Treasury. The CTP itself does not confer AMCT.

U.S. CPA: A different credential type

Certified Public Accountant is a jurisdiction-issued accounting license, not simply another treasury certification. Licensure involves education, experience, examination, and applicable ethics requirements determined by the relevant state or territory. It is a complement for professionals whose treasury work intersects with accounting, but CTP does not replace CPA licensure or confer its legal standing.

The appropriate comparison is therefore role-based: treasury breadth, FP&A specialization, a structured treasury qualification and membership pathway, or accounting licensure.

15. How Can You Verify the Credential and Use Its Letters Correctly?

For formal verification, use AFP’s certification department. AFP requires third-party background or verification companies to provide a release form from the individual concerned. As a practical starting point, request the person’s full name, any available AFP identifying information, and permission to verify current status.

Check the credential name, issuing organization, and whether the person is currently authorized to use it. An old certificate establishes a historical award, not necessarily present standing. AFP-supported digital badges can provide another verification route, but a copied badge image alone is insufficient evidence.

AFP publishes lists of newly certified people, but those lists should not be treated as a comprehensive current-status registry. Absence from a particular new-holder list is not, by itself, evidence of a false claim.

AFP instructs holders to place CTP after their name, for example, Alex Morgan, CTP. A candidate who passes before completing eligibility requirements must not present that examination result as an awarded credential.

Approved retirees use CTP (Retired). Inactive or revoked holders cannot use ordinary CTP letters professionally. A résumé describing a past award should make any noncurrent status unmistakable.

16. Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need a finance degree to become a CTP?

No. The standard route requires two years of qualifying full-time work without a mandatory degree. An eligible graduate degree can replace one year of work experience. A bachelor’s degree alone does not provide that substitution.

Can I take the examination before I have enough experience?

Yes. AFP permits candidates to begin testing before satisfying the experience and education requirements. However, all requirements must be completed within six consecutive testing windows, and the credential is not awarded merely because the examination has been passed.

Is an AFP preparation course mandatory?

No particular preparation course is listed as an award requirement. Candidates may select preparation resources appropriate to their needs. Buying the textbook, completing the Exam Prep Platform, or attending a course does not replace passing the examination and meeting eligibility requirements.

Can candidates outside the United States pursue CTP?

Yes. AFP uses an international Pearson testing-center network. Candidates should check actual local availability before registering or arranging travel. AFP specifically states that the CTP examination has not been available in Quebec since January 1, 2024.

Does CTP remain valid without ongoing AFP membership?

Yes, membership and certification are separate. A holder can maintain CTP without AFP membership by satisfying continuing education, reporting, and payment requirements. Nonmember recertification fees are higher, so remaining certified without membership is not the same as having no ongoing costs.

17. Official Resources and Recent Changes

Official resources available: AFP provides a candidate handbook, eligibility guidance, examination specifications, preparation materials, scoring explanations, ethical standards, and recertification instructions. Candidates should use documents appropriate to their intended testing window.

Material examination change: The June 1-July 31, 2026 window introduced the body of knowledge based on Essentials of Treasury Management, Eighth Edition. The 2026-2028 specification changed domain question ranges and explicitly includes technology-security considerations involving artificial intelligence. January 2026 testing belonged to the earlier 2025B window, so “a 2026 examination” does not by itself identify the applicable syllabus.

Next published window: December 1, 2026-January 31, 2027. Candidates should confirm registration conditions before paying, particularly when re-registering or completing outstanding eligibility requirements.

This profile is an independent Umbrex reference and is not issued or endorsed by the credential owner unless an explicit relationship is stated.
