Certified Speaking Professional™ (CSP®): NSA Requirements, Cost, and Professional Meaning

Table of Contents

1. What Is CSP?

CSP stands for Certified Speaking Professional, an experience- and performance-based professional certification awarded by the National Speakers Association (NSA). It recognizes established professional speakers through documented speaking activity, business qualifications, client evaluations, and assessment of presentation performance. It is not simply a certificate for attending a public-speaking course.

This profile covers the NSA credential, including its application cycle for the Class of 2027. The abbreviation also identifies unrelated qualifications, notably the Board of Certified Safety Professionals’ Certified Safety Professional. The full credential name and issuer therefore matter.

For a client, CSP provides evidence of an established speaking practice and an external assessment process. It should support, rather than replace, evaluation of the speaker’s subject expertise, audience fit, and ability to achieve the objectives of a particular engagement.

2. CSP at a Glance

  • Full name: Certified Speaking Professional.
  • Abbreviation: CSP.
  • Credential type: Professional certification based on experience, documentation, and performance review.
  • Awarding organization: National Speakers Association, United States.
  • Official website: National Speakers Association CSP credential page.
  • First introduced: 1980.
  • Current status: Active; applications for the Class of 2027 are open.
  • Professional focus: Professional speaking, audience engagement, and the business of speaking.
  • Intended career stage: Established practitioners, not beginning speakers.
  • Geographic scope: U.S.-issued credential with international applicants and professional recognition.
  • Main eligibility requirement: Documented qualifications under one of four speaking-business pathways.
  • Assessment: Application review, client evaluations, presentation-video review, and final approval.
  • Indicative initial cost: For the 2027 cycle, US$375 for qualifying association members or US$988 for U.S. nonmembers, excluding other expenses.
  • Maintenance: Three-year renewal, 15 qualifying education credits, coursework, oath confirmation, and a renewal fee.
  • Verification: NSA’s CSP directory, supplemented by direct status confirmation when needed.

3. Who Awards and Oversees the Credential?

NSA administers this CSP pathway. Its CSP Committee develops application policies, evaluation benchmarks, and renewal guidance. Current CSP holders assess submitted videos, while NSA’s Board of Directors makes the final award decision. This is an association-administered review process, not a testing-center examination.

Ethical oversight is separate from routine application administration. NSA’s Committee on Ethics and Professional Behavior operates under its board, and the CSP oath commits applicants to NSA’s ethical requirements. Application questions should go to the CSP administrator; complaints about conduct follow the association’s ethics process.

The Global Speakers Federation (GSF) recognizes CSP within its member-association system and identifies other associations with CSP-awarding pathways, including Professional Speakers Australia. Consequently, NSA’s fees and procedures should not automatically be applied to every CSP worldwide. GSF recognition is professional-association recognition, not government authorization to practise a regulated profession.

4. When and Why Was It Created?

NSA established CSP in 1980 to recognize professional speaking through evidence of sustained practice, client service, and speaking competence. Its distinguishing feature is the combination of business evidence and performance evaluation, rather than recognition for completing training alone.

Three subsequent developments help explain the credential today:

  • 1986: NSA established its eight professional competencies, providing a framework for both speaking craft and business capability.
  • 2022: NSA removed the requirement to remain an association member to hold CSP. Membership and certification became more clearly separated.
  • Class of 2026: NSA introduced additional business-model pathways, raised the Traditional Path’s financial thresholds, and explicitly distinguished the employee/organizational route. These pathways continue in the 2027 materials.

The practical implication is that an older holder may have qualified under different entry rules. Current standing should not be interpreted as proof that the person originally satisfied today’s specific presentation and income thresholds.

5. Who Pursues the Credential, and Where Is It Used?

NSA positions CSP for professional speakers whose work may include keynotes, training, facilitation, consulting, and coaching. However, holding one of those job titles does not make every activity within the role a qualifying speaking engagement.

The credential is most relevant when speaking is a substantial professional activity, rather than an occasional responsibility. Potential candidates include independent keynote speakers, trainers with substantial presentation histories, and organizational employees whose work is predominantly speaking-related. The separate business pathways accommodate different combinations of presentation volume, income, and employment arrangements.

Documented use extends beyond speakers’ own marketing. For example, the California Plumbing and Mechanical Contractors Association’s January-June 2026 education catalog identifies a CSP holder among its leadership and communication instructors. That is evidence of use in construction-sector professional education, not proof that the industry requires the credential.

For consulting assignments such as executive presentation skills training, CSP can be relevant evidence of the instructor’s own presentation capability. Hiring teams should still request separate evidence of teaching effectiveness, diagnostic feedback, and participant improvement. Being an effective speaker and being an effective presentation coach are related but different capabilities.

6. What Knowledge and Skills Does It Cover?

NSA organizes professional speaking around four broad categories: eloquence, expertise, enterprise, and ethics. Its eight-competency framework addresses both communication and the commercial practice surrounding it. These are competency areas, not eight separately scored written examinations.

  • Environmental trends and impact: Understanding audience needs and keeping content relevant to changing conditions.
  • Professionalism: Building trust through ethical conduct and dependable relationships with clients and colleagues.
  • Content development: Researching, selecting, and developing original, defensible material.
  • Product development: Translating expertise into learning products and related professional offerings.
  • Platform mechanics: Preparing the physical or virtual presentation environment and using equipment appropriately.
  • Performance mastery: Structuring and delivering material through voice, movement, timing, storytelling, and interaction.
  • Business development: Generating engagements through marketing, sales, negotiation, and client relationships.
  • Strategic and operational business management: Managing the speaking practice’s finances, risks, systems, and direction.

Applied capabilities

Illustrative applications include adapting a technical association presentation for a mixed-experience audience, designing an interactive leadership session for managers, or restructuring an executive’s presentation so its central recommendation is understandable and memorable.

For a healthcare conference, for example, communication skill may help make complex material accessible. It does not establish the speaker’s clinical qualifications or validate every medical claim in the presentation.

Boundaries

The assessment includes an actual performance sample, which is materially different from testing knowledge alone. Nevertheless, reviewers assess submitted footage, not every engagement the speaker has delivered. A strong keynote sample should not be treated as automatic evidence of coaching skill, workshop design, technical expertise, or successful organizational change.

7. What Are the Eligibility Requirements?

The current NSA pathway summaries identify four routes. The dollar thresholds below describe U.S. qualifying speaking income, not credential fees:

  • Traditional Path: 250 paid presentations within a 10-year period; at least US$500 in qualifying compensation per presentation; and at least five qualifying years with US$75,000 or more in speaking income.
  • Mid-Volume, High-Income Path: 150 paid presentations within 10 years; a US$500 minimum qualifying presentation fee; and at least five years with US$100,000 or more in speaking income.
  • Premium Speaker Path: 50 paid presentations over five years, with at least US$150,000 in speaking income in each of those years.
  • Employee/Organizational Speaker Path: 250 internal or external presentations within 10 years, with at least 50% of salary and work time allocated to speaking-related responsibilities, supported by employer documentation.

Applicants also need qualifying NSA or GSF-association event attendance within the preceding 10 years, mandatory applicant coursework, and compliance with ethical requirements. No university degree or prior professional license is listed as an entry prerequisite. Membership is not mandatory.

Qualifying presentations generally must last at least 20 minutes and contain at least 75% spoken content from the applicant. Ordinary board meetings, coaching sessions, courtroom testimony, and standard emcee introductions are among the excluded activities. Salaried applicants must distinguish live presentation time from research, travel, and preparation.

International candidates should obtain NSA’s country-specific income determination rather than simply converting the U.S. thresholds at a market exchange rate. Applicants relying on earlier engagements, unusual compensation arrangements, or online event attendance should secure eligibility confirmation before paying the nonrefundable fee.

8. How Do You Earn the Credential?

The process begins with an interest form and a discussion with NSA staff. After payment, the application proceeds through four phases:

  • Phase 1, documentation: Submit the presentation/salary spreadsheet, event-attendance evidence, presentation video, business-model description, completed coursework, signed oath, and applicable employer letters.
  • Phase 2, client evaluation: Obtain at least 20 completed client evaluations within the assigned period, generally two weeks.
  • Phase 3, video review: CSP reviewers evaluate the submitted presentation using NSA’s review framework.
  • Phase 4, final decision: NSA’s board determines whether to award the credential. Completing earlier phases does not guarantee approval.

The business-model form asks for a description of no more than 250 words. This is an opportunity to explain how speaking generates income and fits the applicant’s professional practice, not a substitute for supporting records.

Video and assessment requirements

Applicants submit either one 40-45-minute video or two 20-25-minute videos. Footage should reflect their current speaking work and expertise, be no more than two years old, and visibly demonstrate audience engagement. A promotional montage is not an appropriate substitute for a continuous presentation sample.

Reviewers evaluate the submitted video rather than searching the applicant’s website for better examples. NSA uses standardized evaluations and a preset scoring threshold. The public guide does not provide a numerical cutoff that candidates can meaningfully convert into a percentage-correct target.

There is no conventional proctored CSP examination. Required learning includes post-tests, but the award depends on the wider review process. Non-English presentation footage requires an English transcript.

If an application is unsuccessful, use the committee’s feedback to identify whether the problem concerns documentation, eligibility, or performance. The current FAQ permits corrections before the January deadline; after that deadline, reapplication is in a subsequent annual cycle.

9. How Long Does It Take, and How Do Candidates Prepare?

Prerequisite-building time: The independent-speaker routes require five qualifying income years. Preparation cannot compress that business history into a short course.

Preparation time: The practical workload depends on record quality and whether suitable footage already exists. Build an engagement inventory, reconcile income records, confirm client contact details, and identify footage before opening an application. NSA specifically warns about incomplete spreadsheets, outdated contacts, insufficient evaluations, and unsuitable videos.

Administrative time: The 2027 checklist anticipates final decisions in April 2027. Applicants should therefore plan around an annual review cycle rather than expect an immediate award after submitting materials.

Preparation choices: An experienced speaker can provide candid feedback on presentation footage, but a current voting CSP Committee member is not an appropriate pre-submission reviewer. Prioritize understandable audio, genuine audience interaction, and representative work over expensive production.

10. How Much Does the Credential Cost?

For the Class of 2027 application cycle, as of September 25, 2026, NSA lists these nonrefundable application charges:

  • NSA and qualifying GSF-association members: US$375.
  • U.S. nonmembers: US$988.
  • Subsequent-year resubmission: US$200.
  • International nonmembers: Obtain the applicable charge directly from NSA.

Illustrative first-attempt budget: An existing qualifying member who already satisfies the attendance requirement and has usable footage can begin with the US$375 application charge. This excludes existing membership costs, travel, event registration, optional coaching, and recording expenses.

Joining NSA solely to obtain member pricing should be evaluated separately. Its posted annual membership price is US$988, making membership plus the CSP application US$1,363 before other expenses. Membership may offer additional benefits, but it is not automatically the cheaper certification route.

Ongoing costs: Renewal currently costs US$135 for members or US$325 for nonmembers every three years. Budget separately for qualifying professional development and any optional association dues.

11. How Do Holders Maintain the Credential?

NSA’s current maintenance requirements are:

  • Renew every three years.
  • Earn 15 qualifying NSA or GSF education credits during that period.
  • Complete the renewal form and required CSP coursework.
  • Review and confirm the CSP oath.
  • Pay the applicable renewal charge.

Credits are assigned to eligible activities rather than treated as a universal clock-hour requirement. For example, NSA’s 2026 CSP/CEP/CPAE Summit offers six CSP credits, while Activate 2026 offers three. Holders should retain documentation of the activity, date, and awarded credits.

CSP Emeritus: NSA offers this status, formerly called Lifetime CSP, to speakers aged 65 or older who have renewed at least once, completed the oath, and paid the designated fee. It is a specific status, not an automatic consequence of reaching retirement age.

For an overdue credential, ask NSA about reinstatement and permitted designation use. An old certificate establishes a historical award, not necessarily current standing. Likewise, a former member may still hold a current credential because association membership and CSP maintenance are separate.

12. What Is Its Professional Value, and What Are Its Limitations?

CSP has documented recognition within the professional-speaking community through the GSF. Outside the issuer, PCMA’s Capital Chapter included it among professional development credentials for the meetings industry in its September/October 2020 publication. That demonstrates industry awareness, not a universal purchasing requirement.

Potential value arises through several mechanisms. NSA promotes its CSP member directory to meeting planners, while credential-holder events provide targeted professional development and peer contact. These are identifiable benefits, although they do not establish how much additional business any particular holder will win.

For buyers, the review process can reduce uncertainty about whether a speaker has an established practice and can deliver beyond a short promotional clip. For candidates, assembling records and obtaining structured feedback can expose weaknesses in business administration or presentation technique. These are reasonable professional interpretations of the process, not guaranteed outcomes.

Do not infer a salary or speaking-fee premium from the entry thresholds. Substantial income is already an admission requirement for several routes, so higher earnings among holders would not, by themselves, show that certification caused the difference.

Its relevance is narrower when the assignment primarily requires technical analysis, implementation leadership, or regulated professional judgment. For such work, speaking ability may be useful, but it should not displace evidence of the principal capability being purchased.

13. What Should Employers and Clients Infer from It?

What the credential establishes

A verified holder has satisfied the issuer’s applicable qualification and review process, including documented professional activity and client assessment. Current standing also matters because CSP has maintenance obligations. The precise entry standards depend on the holder’s award year and pathway.

What still requires evaluation

Do not assume the credential establishes expertise in your industry, instructional design, executive coaching, commercial judgment, or management of a large consulting program. Assess the individual, not just the designation. A CSP held by one employee also should not be treated as certification of the entire firm.

Where it can help in staffing

Consider it relevant supporting evidence for keynote delivery, communication-heavy training, or an assignment requiring repeated engagement with substantial audiences. For a strategy offsite or transformation workshop, separately test the person’s ability to facilitate decisions and manage disagreement, rather than merely deliver an engaging presentation.

Evidence to request

Request a recent continuous recording, an anonymized client brief, an example of audience-specific customization, and references from comparable engagements. For training assignments, request learning objectives and evidence of participant application, not only satisfaction ratings.

Three questions to ask

  • How did you change a presentation after discovering that the audience’s needs differed from the client’s original brief? A useful answer demonstrates diagnosis, customization, and explicit trade-offs.
  • Show us a moment when audience engagement weakened and explain how you responded. Look for accurate observation and purposeful adaptation, rather than a claim that every audience responds positively.
  • How do you verify substantive claims and document permission or attribution for stories, images, and borrowed material? A useful answer describes a repeatable process, supporting the credential’s emphasis on ethical professional practice.
  • Certified Emcee Professional (CEP): NSA’s specialist designation addresses event hosting, continuity, and audience engagement. Its announced 2027 pathways require at least five years of experience and specified engagement and income evidence, followed by review. Applications open November 1, 2026. It is a potential complement for speakers who also host events, not a substitute for CSP’s speaking focus.
  • CPAE Speaker Hall of Fame: The Council of Peers Award for Excellence is a lifetime, peer-evaluated honor. It considers message, delivery, experience, professionalism, and supporting materials, rather than CSP’s presentation-count and income thresholds. It is an award, not an examination-based certification or an automatic next step after CSP.
  • Certified Professional in Talent Development (CPTD): This ATD Certification Institute credential addresses broader talent-development work. Its standard route requires five years of relevant experience and 60 hours of recent professional development, followed by a three-hour examination. It can complement CSP when the assignment includes developing and evaluating organizational learning, rather than presentation delivery alone.
  • Global Speaking Fellow: The GSF designation recognizes sustained international speaking capability through experience, client evidence, and peer review. CSP or FPSA is a prerequisite. It provides a formal complementary pathway for established speakers working across international markets; CSP alone does not establish that global experience.

15. How Can You Verify the Credential and Use Its Letters Correctly?

Start with NSA’s CSP directory, matching the professional’s full name and identifying details. Its current directory system lists CSP members who complete their profiles and opt in. It is therefore not a comprehensive register of every person entitled to hold the credential. A missing entry is not sufficient evidence of a false claim.

For a material hiring decision, request the person’s awarding organization, award year, and current renewal or emeritus documentation. Where necessary, ask the NSA CSP administrator to confirm status. Distinguish an original award certificate from evidence that the designation remains current.

NSA’s trademark guidance gives the post-nominal form as Jane Doe, CSP, without a registered-trademark symbol after the name. In standalone references to the credential, its guidance calls for the appropriate symbols on first use, with subsequent mentions normally omitting them.

The CSP logo is reserved for current holders in good standing and must not be altered. Applicants should describe themselves as applicants rather than append CSP to their names. A course-completion record, accepted application, or completed client-review stage is not the final award.

16. Frequently Asked Questions

Is there a CSP exam?

There is no conventional proctored certification examination. Required coursework includes post-tests, but the substantive assessment relies on professional records, client evaluations, presentation footage, and final approval. Preparing only for a knowledge test would miss the central requirements.

Can salaried employees qualify?

Yes. The employee/organizational pathway recognizes documented speaking work within employment. Candidates need employer evidence and must distinguish time spent presenting from preparation or travel. A communications job title alone does not establish eligibility.

Can books or other product sales count as speaking income?

Qualifying sales made by midnight on the presentation day can count. This does not mean that all annual book, coaching, or digital-product revenue qualifies. Keep records connecting the income to the relevant presentation and apply NSA’s documentation rules.

Must the presentation video be in English?

No. NSA accepts non-English presentation footage with an English transcript of the audio. Reviewers who speak the presentation’s language are used where possible. The footage must still satisfy the other application requirements.

Does completing the required coursework make someone a CSP?

No. Coursework is one component of the application. The oath confirms completion and ethical commitments, while the credential requires the separate review and award process. Candidates should not present a training record as proof of certification.

17. Official Resources and Recent Changes

Official resources: NSA provides an application guide, checklist, presentation spreadsheet, business-model form, oath, coursework, video guidance, renewal instructions, and designation-use rules. Use the materials for the intended application class.

Current application timing: The Class of 2027 cycle opened September 1, 2026, and closes January 8, 2027, at 11:59 p.m. Pacific Standard Time. That specific deadline takes precedence over older general references to January 10.

Material changes: The four-pathway structure introduced for 2026 remains applicable. Older Traditional Path references to US$50,000 annual income and US$250 per presentation should not be treated as the general current thresholds. Applicants seeking transitional treatment of earlier engagements should obtain an explicit eligibility determination.
