CSP-PO: Certified Scrum Professional – Product Owner
1. What Is CSP-PO?
CSP-PO stands for Certified Scrum Professional – Product Owner, a professional-level certification awarded by Scrum Alliance. It is the highest credential in the organization’s three-stage product owner track, following Certified Scrum Product Owner (CSPO) and Advanced Certified Scrum Product Owner (A-CSPO). Its focus is experienced product ownership, rather than introductory Scrum knowledge or general project administration.
The current route combines an A-CSPO prerequisite, completion of an approved educational offering, and validation of at least 24 months of product owner experience within the preceding five years. Assessment occurs through educator-designed program components rather than a common, centrally administered CSP-PO examination.
For a hiring manager, the reasonable interpretation is structured professional development backed by a role-specific experience requirement. It is not, by itself, evidence that someone has built a commercially successful product, led a large organization, or delivered results in a particular industry.

3. Who Awards and Oversees the Credential?
Scrum Alliance sets the credential requirements and approves educational offerings. Educators design their teaching materials and assessment activities within that framework. Approval requires materials mapped to the current learning objectives and aligned with the Scrum Guide. A trainer’s permission to deliver foundational courses does not automatically authorize delivery of advanced or professional courses.
This division matters: the issuer establishes the requirements, while the educator evaluates completion of the learning experience. Two approved programs may therefore differ in exercises, mentoring, scheduling, and assignments without being different credentials.
Scrum Alliance also maintains certification records, licensing conditions, and a Code of Ethics. Its ethics rules require accurate representation of qualifications and experience and prohibit deceptive conduct. Credential disputes and status questions belong with the issuer; feedback on an individual assignment starts with the educator.
CSP-PO is an issuer-governed certification, not a statutory professional license. Nor does an individual’s certification establish that the person’s employer or consulting firm is accredited by Scrum Alliance.
4. When and Why Was the Credential Created?
The present CSP-PO pathway grew out of the earlier Certified Scrum Professional program. Scrum Alliance’s 2017-2018 State of Scrum report described the new advanced credentials as a response to demand for clearer, role-specific development paths addressing practical workplace challenges. The intention was to extend learning beyond foundational Scrum training.
- 2017: Advanced product owner and Scrum Master credentials became part of the developing Path to CSP program.
- January 2018: The progressive, role-specific course model replaced the previous application-based route for new CSP candidates. Applications under the earlier approach had a December 31, 2017 deadline.
- January 2022: Scrum Alliance published the CSP-PO learning-objectives document currently linked from its credential page.
Historical CSP requirements should not be applied to today’s CSP-PO candidates. Older material describing a CSP examination, 36 months of experience, or an initial 70-SEU requirement concerns predecessor arrangements. For a long-standing holder, ask about the original award date and pathway rather than assuming today’s course sequence was used.
5. Who Pursues the Credential, and Where Is It Used?
The issuer positions CSP-PO for product owners with substantial practical experience who want to deepen their product-management capabilities. It is particularly relevant to practitioners moving beyond maintaining a backlog toward shaping product direction, testing assumptions, and resolving difficult investment or stakeholder choices.
Potential candidates include product owners, product managers performing Scrum product owner accountabilities, and consultants who support product organizations. A business analyst or project manager should evaluate the match through actual responsibilities, not job title alone. Scrum defines the product owner’s accountability around maximizing product value and effective Product Backlog management.
Illustrative settings include customer-facing software, internal enterprise platforms, and digitally enabled services. An e-commerce product owner might prioritize improvements to checkout; a financial-services practitioner might investigate onboarding friction; an internal-platform owner might balance competing business-unit needs. These examples describe applications of the discipline, not proof of sector-specific adoption rates or expertise.
For consulting assignments, the curriculum suggests a direct connection to product strategy work that joins customer evidence, business models, and development priorities. That is a relevance judgment, not a claim that certification alone qualifies someone to lead the entire engagement.
CSP-PO may be requested by an employer or client, but certification is not an accountability requirement imposed by the Scrum framework itself.
6. What Knowledge and Skills Does It Cover?
The official objectives can be organized into seven practical areas:
- Stakeholder collaboration: Evaluate difficult discussions, improve facilitation, and choose ways to gather and communicate stakeholder information.
- Team launch and multiple-team ownership: Plan a Scrum team’s start, clarify quality expectations, and compare approaches to coordinating product ownership across teams.
- Strategy and business models: Develop a business model and competitive analysis to connect product choices with market conditions.
- Planning and economics: Compare forecasting approaches, plan releases, assess profitability, calculate cost of delay, and consider incremental investment.
- Customer research: Integrate research into discovery and development rather than treating it as an isolated preliminary activity.
- Experimentation: Choose an experiment suited to a hypothesis and evaluate what its results mean.
- Backlog decisions: Compare ordering techniques, defend priorities, and assess refinement while distinguishing delivered output from customer or business outcomes.
These are learning objectives, not percentage-weighted domains of a standardized examination.
Applied capabilities
Illustrative applications include comparing two proposed features using expected benefit and delay costs; designing a small customer experiment before funding a larger release; and revising priorities when evidence challenges the original business model. Scrum Alliance’s accompanying examples discuss profitability measures, incremental release strategies, and research-based discovery.
In a retail setting, for example, a practitioner could test whether a proposed loyalty feature addresses a genuine customer problem before committing the full development budget. For an internal platform, the equivalent exercise could test whether a requested workflow change actually reduces employees’ effort.
Boundaries
The curriculum’s breadth should not be mistaken for proof of specialist competence. Employers should separately assess statistical experimentation, software architecture, financial modeling, cybersecurity, and industry regulation when those capabilities matter. Course exercises also do not establish the scale or quality of a holder’s workplace results.
7. What Are the Eligibility Requirements?
Prior credential: Candidates must hold A-CSPO. Scrum Alliance explicitly permits an active or expired A-CSPO as the prerequisite. A credential from another Scrum Alliance track cannot substitute for the product owner prerequisite.
Experience: The award requires at least 24 months of work experience specific to product owner accountability within the previous five years. Candidates may satisfy the experience requirement before or after attending the CSP-PO course, but course attendance alone does not confer the completed credential.
Education: The published route does not specify a university degree. It does require the relevant prior certification and successful completion of an approved CSP-PO educational offering, including any required work outside scheduled sessions.
Documentation: Candidates enter experience in their Scrum Alliance profile, complete the section identifying their specific Scrum accountability, and attest that the information is accurate. For CSP-PO, the selected accountability must be product owner. This is distinct from merely recording employment dates.
Final conditions: Candidates must complete their membership profile and accept the CSP-PO license agreement. The credential is not awarded solely because tuition was paid or a training certificate was issued.
For mixed responsibilities, describe the product decisions actually owned: product goals, stakeholder trade-offs, backlog ordering, and value maximization. Ask Scrum Alliance to resolve uncertain eligibility rather than assuming that any work on an agile project qualifies. Keep nonconfidential records that explain the dates and substance of the experience.
8. How Do You Earn the Credential?
Step 1: Complete the preceding product owner stages
The formal progression is CSPO, then A-CSPO, then CSP-PO. CSPO supplies the foundation; A-CSPO adds advanced learning and a one-year experience threshold. CSP-PO is the subsequent professional stage, not an alternative starting point.
Step 2: Select an approved educational offering
Check that the offering is specifically approved for CSP-PO. Current course-approval requirements specify at least 16 hours of approved trainer-student contact, including at least four hours live face-to-face, virtually or in person. The live portion cannot be replaced by prerecorded material. Homework and self-study should not be confused with that minimum live requirement.
Step 3: Complete the educator’s assessed work
Programs may use exercises, discussions, applied assignments, and mentoring. Successful completion requires more than passive attendance. For example, an approved guided-learning offering describes instructor evaluation of assignments and exercises before requesting certification, including evidence of applying learning with a Scrum or agile team. That illustrates one delivery model, not a universal assignment format.
There is no common CSP-PO exam with a universal question count, testing duration, or pass mark. Consequently, generic “CSP-PO practice exam” claims should not be mistaken for the issuer’s actual award process. Ask the educator how performance is evaluated, what happens if work needs improvement, and which completion deadlines apply.
Step 4: Record qualifying experience
Complete both the work-history and specific-accountability fields in the member profile. Select product owner and confirm the accuracy of the submission. Scrum Alliance states that experience validation may take up to one day after submission, although that is not an end-to-end certification processing guarantee.
Step 5: Activate the award
The trainer or training partner must activate the student’s certification following course completion. An advanced or professional credential may remain inactive if experience requirements have not been met. Resolve missing-course records with the educator and account or status issues with Scrum Alliance, then complete the issuer’s final agreement steps.
9. How Long Does It Take, and How Do Candidates Prepare?
Prerequisite-building time: A newcomer needs qualifying product owner experience as well as the preceding credentials. An experienced A-CSPO holder does not necessarily need another two years after enrollment: the rule concerns relevant experience within the five-year window.
Learning time: Scrum Alliance’s catalog describes a 16-plus-hour investment for CSP-PO. Actual elapsed time depends on whether the educator uses a concentrated course, spaced sessions, or a guided program with applied work. One approved self-paced program, for example, gives participants a year to finish. That is provider-specific, not a universal deadline.
Preparation: Review the CSP-PO learning objectives, refresh the Scrum Guide, and follow the educator’s instructions. Bring an anonymized product challenge involving priorities, customer evidence, or investment decisions. Preparing a concrete example will usually be more useful than memorizing terminology.
Administrative time: Allow for educator reporting, experience validation, and account activation. A missing award may reflect an incomplete experience record or a duplicate account rather than unsuccessful coursework.
There is no defensible universal study-hour estimate beyond the program’s stated requirements.
10. How Much Does the Credential Cost?
CSP-PO does not have one universal tuition price. For a concrete US benchmark available by September 25, 2026, Michigan Technology Services advertised its August 6-7, 2026 live-online offering at US$1,385 standard tuition or US$1,185 early booking, with the credential included. These are dated course prices, not a guaranteed current quote or market-wide range.
- Mandatory initial spending: The approved CSP-PO program, plus earlier CSPO and A-CSPO courses if those prerequisites have not already been earned.
- Optional spending: Additional books, coaching, workshops, or other preparation beyond the selected program’s requirements.
- Changes and reassessment: Obtain the educator’s cancellation, transfer, unfinished-work, and reassessment terms before registering. Do not assume a standardized examination-retake policy applies.
- Ongoing spending: The normal professional-level renewal fee is US$250 for a two-year term, in addition to the required learning.
For an eligible A-CSPO holder using the standard-price example, the illustrative incremental initial cost is therefore US$1,385, assuming successful completion without additional charges. This excludes prerequisite courses, applicable taxes, travel, optional materials, and time away from work. Confirm registration and membership inclusions on the invoice rather than adding an assumed separate membership charge.
Continuing education need not involve additional paid courses: relevant reading, webinars, events, and volunteering can qualify for SEUs.
11. How Do Holders Maintain the Credential?
The normal CSP-PO renewal cycle is two years. Renewal requires 40 Scrum Education Units and a US$250 fee. One hour of qualifying learning or activity generally equals one SEU. Renewing the highest credential within a single track also renews the lower credentials in that track.
Holders record learning through their member dashboard. Scrum Alliance’s guidance requires the activity date to fall within the applicable 2.5-year period preceding the certification’s current expiration date, and previously submitted units cannot be reused for a later renewal. Check the dashboard’s calculation when maintaining credentials across multiple tracks.
An alternative is earning another Scrum Alliance certification through a qualifying course. This can extend previously earned certifications without the separate renewal fee and SEU submission. Tuition still applies. A microcredential does not provide the same automatic certification renewal, although its learning can contribute SEUs.
Missing renewal does not permanently revoke the credential solely because of the missed deadline. An expired credential can be renewed, with the new two-year period running from the renewal payment date. Nevertheless, an expired or inactive credential should not be represented as currently active.
Ethical and licensing obligations continue to matter independently of learning and payment. Administrative lapse and disciplinary action are different issues; employers needing disciplinary information should request issuer verification with the holder’s consent.
12. What Is Its Professional Value, and What Are Its Limitations?
CSP-PO can make a professional’s development path easier to interpret. Compared with an introductory course alone, its current route includes a more substantial experience threshold and educator-evaluated advanced learning. The practical value is greatest when that learning addresses decisions the person actually owns, rather than merely adding letters to a résumé.
There are documented examples of procurement-related recognition. Platinum Edge’s GSA-listed labor-category document accepts CSP, CSP-SM, CSP-PO, or specified alternatives for certain agile coaching and subject-matter roles, alongside separate experience and education requirements. This illustrates a supplier’s staffing specification, not a government-wide requirement or proof that the credential alone qualifies someone as an agile coach.
For an individual considering the investment, useful questions are whether the program addresses a current capability gap, whether employer funding is available, and whether there will be an opportunity to apply the learning. Compare the actual course design and feedback arrangements, not just the badge or teaching hours.
The credential should not be assigned a universal salary premium. Broad claims about agile certification and compensation do not establish the incremental effect of CSP-PO for a particular professional.
Its relevance may also be limited where the assignment primarily requires technical architecture, regulated-domain expertise, sales leadership, or full profit-and-loss responsibility. In those cases, evaluate the credential as supplementary evidence and focus selection on directly comparable work.
13. What Should Employers and Clients Infer From It?
What it establishes
For someone earning CSP-PO through the current route, the credential indicates completion of approved learning and the required product owner experience validation. Active status also indicates that the holder has met the applicable renewal arrangements. It does not mean an independent assessor has audited the commercial success of the person’s products.
What still needs evaluation
Assess industry knowledge, decision authority, product scale, communication, technical understanding, and delivery results separately. Ask whether the person genuinely made priority and value decisions or mainly administered requests decided elsewhere.
Potential staffing applications include product discovery, backlog improvement, release planning, and product ownership spanning multiple teams. Treat these as curriculum-based relevance judgments, not automatic qualification for a whole transformation program.
Evidence to request
Request nonconfidential examples such as an anonymized prioritization decision, an experiment summary, a release forecast with assumptions, and a before-and-after outcome measure. Separate the person’s individual contribution from the team’s overall achievement. Where necessary, accept reconstructed examples rather than confidential client materials.
Three questions to ask
- How did you use cost of delay and uncertain benefits to defend a backlog order against conflicting stakeholder requests? A useful answer identifies assumptions, trade-offs, sensitivity to uncertainty, and what happened after the decision.
- When a product experiment contradicted your business model, how did you decide whether to stop, change direction, or continue? Look for a clear hypothesis, credible evidence, decision criteria, and a concrete response rather than retrospective justification.
- How did you coordinate one product across multiple Scrum teams while keeping ownership, backlog ordering, and quality expectations clear? A useful answer explains decision rights, collaboration, dependencies, and how coordination avoided becoming competing local priority lists.
14. How Does It Compare With Related Credentials?
- CSPO, Certified Scrum Product Owner: The foundational Scrum Alliance credential introduces product ownership and Scrum. Its 16-hour course is an entry point rather than evidence of the experience required for CSP-PO. It is a formal prerequisite stage, not an equivalent professional-level alternative.
- A-CSPO, Advanced Certified Scrum Product Owner: The immediate predecessor requires CSPO, approved advanced learning, and at least 12 months of relevant experience. It develops capabilities beyond the basics; CSP-PO adds the professional-stage curriculum and higher experience threshold.
- PSPO II, Professional Scrum Product Owner II: Scrum.org’s exam-based alternative uses a 40-question, 60-minute assessment with an 85% passing score. Its certification is lifetime rather than subject to Scrum Alliance’s two-year renewal cycle. It is not a stage within the Scrum Alliance pathway.
- CSP-SM, Certified Scrum Professional – ScrumMaster: This parallel Scrum Alliance credential focuses on Scrum Master practice, including facilitation, coaching, and team effectiveness. It requires A-CSM and role-specific experience. It can complement CSP-PO for someone performing both accountabilities, but it does not replace the product owner prerequisite.
The useful comparison is learning and assessment fit: foundational preparation, advanced development, professional experience, or examination-based evidence. None of these comparisons establishes a universal prestige ranking or automatic equivalence.
15. How Can You Verify the Credential and Use Its Letters Correctly?
Start with Scrum Alliance’s Member Search. Ask the holder for the name associated with the account and their certificant or member identifier to help resolve identity questions. Public search provides the person’s profile, earned credentials, and active or inactive status.
A missing result is not conclusive evidence of a false claim. Only people with active Scrum Alliance membership appear in public search. An inactive membership can therefore prevent discovery of a genuine historical credential.
For formal verification of issuance dates, expiration dates, or disciplinary information, contact Scrum Alliance support. The issuer requires a signed consent or information-release authorization before supplying the requested information. A certificate image is useful supporting material, but it does not independently establish current status.
Use the designation CSP-PO, or the issuer’s styled CSP®-PO, to identify the credential actually awarded. The license is personal and concerns certification marks used with the holder’s Scrum-related services; it does not transfer certification rights to a company.
Someone who has completed coursework but is awaiting experience validation should describe that pending position, not claim the completed credential. Similarly, an inactive holder should make the status explicit rather than present an active badge. Accurate representation is an express ethical obligation.
16. Frequently Asked Questions
Do the two years of experience have to follow A-CSPO?
The stated CSP-PO rule is 24 months of relevant product owner experience within the preceding five years, not a mandatory two-year wait after earning A-CSPO. The experience requirement may be satisfied before or after the CSP-PO course.
Can an expired A-CSPO be used as the prerequisite?
Yes. Scrum Alliance expressly accepts an active or expired A-CSPO. Earning CSP-PO also renews the earlier A-CSPO and CSPO credentials. Confirm any provider-specific enrollment conditions before paying for a particular offering.
Can CSP-PO be earned entirely by watching recorded lessons?
Not under the current course-approval requirements. Even a guided or partly self-paced offering must include the required live interaction. Completing recordings also does not remove the educator-assessed work, prior-credential, or professional-experience conditions.
Does CSP-PO authorize someone to teach official certification courses?
No. Official trainer authorization is separate. An active CSP-PO can support eligibility to pursue Certified Scrum Trainer status, but it is not itself that designation. Delivering advanced and professional courses requires additional approval.
Will a Scrum Alliance microcredential renew CSP-PO?
No. A microcredential can provide qualifying SEUs and a two-year membership, but membership renewal is not the same as certification renewal. CSP-PO still needs the applicable certification-renewal route to remain active.
17. Official Resources and Recent Changes
Official resources available: Scrum Alliance provides the CSP-PO learning objectives, approved-course listings, experience-entry guidance, renewal and SEU instructions, licensing conditions, ethics rules, and member verification support. Candidates should use the approved educator’s instructions for assignment formats and completion deadlines.
Recent clarification: Renewal guidance updated September 11, 2026 confirms that an expired certification can still be renewed and that late renewal starts a full two-year term from payment. The update date should not be confused with an announced change to CSP-PO eligibility.
This profile is an independent Umbrex reference and is not issued or endorsed by the credential owner unless an explicit relationship is stated.
