CGMA: Chartered Global Management Accountant Requirements, Cost, and Professional Meaning
1. What Is CGMA?
CGMA stands for Chartered Global Management Accountant, a professional management-accounting designation issued by AICPA & CIMA, together as the Association of International Certified Professional Accountants. It recognizes a combination of accounting knowledge, business judgment, relevant experience, and professional obligations directed toward organizational decision-making and performance. It is not simply a course-completion certificate.
Current qualification routes combine assessments, recognized prior learning where applicable, and practical experience. The full professional qualification progresses through Operational, Management, and Strategic levels; approved entry routes can shorten that journey. Seeing CGMA after someone’s name should indicate professional qualification and current entitlement to the designation, not necessarily completion of every examination in the full route. Historical admission arrangements also matter.
CGMA is not a U.S. CPA license. It does not independently authorize regulated public-accounting activities or replace jurisdiction-specific licensing requirements.

3. Who Awards and Oversees the Credential?
The designation was created jointly by the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants and the Chartered Institute of Management Accountants. Their combined Association supports the qualification, while the constituent professional bodies retain membership responsibilities. CIMA administers its professional qualification and practical-experience process; AICPA also provides routes and programs serving its candidates and members.
Pearson VUE delivers professional examinations at test centers and through eligible online arrangements. It is the examination-delivery provider, not the credential owner. The issuer publishes the syllabus, assessment blueprints, and qualification requirements.
Professional oversight includes separate AICPA and CIMA misconduct procedures. CIMA investigates complaints concerning members and registered candidates and provides a disciplinary appeal mechanism. These professional-accountability arrangements should not be confused with governmental licensing or accreditation of a consulting firm.
4. When and Why Was the Credential Created?
AICPA and CIMA approved their joint venture in 2011 and publicly launched CGMA on January 31, 2012. The purpose was to give management accountants a shared international designation reflecting their contribution beyond historical financial reporting, including business decisions, nonfinancial performance, risk, and long-term value creation.
Three developments help explain the credential today:
- Initial admission arrangements: Eligible AICPA voting members could obtain CGMA by meeting the applicable experience requirements without the later CGMA assessment. Existing CIMA members brought their underlying professional qualification.
- 2015 assessment requirement: The initial AICPA arrangements provided for an assessment requirement for new applicants from January 2015. It is therefore incorrect to assume every current holder passed the same CGMA examination.
- 2026 curriculum refresh: The qualification strengthened business partnering, analytical judgment, sustainability, and emerging-technology content, including generative AI.
For hiring purposes, the relevant distinction is not whether an older credential is inherently weaker. It is what the person’s actual qualifying route, subsequent development, and delivery record demonstrate.
5. Who Pursues the Credential, and Where Is It Used?
CGMA is directed toward professionals who connect financial information with operating and strategic decisions. Relevant roles include management accountant, financial planning and analysis analyst, finance business partner, controller, commercial finance manager, and finance director. CIMA’s experience framework also recognizes relevant work in treasury, consulting, financial reporting, banking, risk, and other finance functions. Eligibility depends on the work performed, not merely the job title.
The curriculum has practical relevance across several settings:
- Manufacturing: Product economics, capacity decisions, cost behavior, and capital expenditure.
- Retail and consumer businesses: Margin analysis, inventory investment, and commercial planning.
- Technology and services: Business-model economics, resource allocation, and performance measures.
- Healthcare, government, and nonprofit organizations: Budget stewardship and evaluation of financial and nonfinancial outcomes.
These are applications inferred from the assessed subject matter, not claims that the designation is universally requested in those industries.
For consulting staffing, CGMA can be relevant when evaluating candidates for budgeting process design. The useful connection is the candidate’s understanding of planning methods, management incentives, and decision support, rather than the letters alone.
Professionals may pursue CGMA to broaden a reporting-focused background, structure their development, or support progression into business-facing finance roles. An employer may prefer or require it for a particular position, but that hiring condition is distinct from legal authorization to practice accounting.
6. What Knowledge and Skills Does It Cover?
The professional qualification organizes learning across Enterprise, Performance, and Financial pillars and three progressively broader levels. Its subject matter can be understood through seven connected areas.
- Planning and performance control: Budgeting, forecasting, variance interpretation, and performance measures. These support decisions about targets, resource allocation, and corrective action.
- Cost and commercial analysis: Costing methods, cost management, and short-term commercial decisions. The emphasis is choosing information appropriate to the decision, rather than treating every allocated accounting cost as economically avoidable.
- Financial reporting and liquidity: Financial statements, group reporting, interpretation of accounts, taxation principles, and working capital. These connect business decisions with reported performance and funding needs.
- Investment and financial strategy: Capital appraisal, financing choices, financial risk, and business valuation. These support evaluation of investments and strategic alternatives.
- Strategy, people, and business partnering: Business models, strategic choices, project management, communication, negotiation, and stakeholder interests.
- Risk and control: Enterprise risks, internal controls, and responses to commercial and technology-related threats.
- Digital finance and sustainability: Use of technology and data, together with sustainability-related costs, performance, and reporting. The 2026 refresh expanded attention to generative AI and sustainability reporting frameworks.
Applied capabilities
Illustrative assignments include explaining why higher factory utilization does not necessarily improve cash generation, comparing an automation investment under different demand scenarios, or redesigning a management report so that operational measures connect to financial outcomes. These examples describe applications of the curriculum, not tasks every holder has performed.
Boundaries
The qualification is not a practical examination in a particular ERP system, a specialist tax credential, or proof of transaction execution experience. Knowledge of valuation or cyber risk should not be interpreted as equivalent to a specialist valuation engagement record or technical cybersecurity capability.
7. What Are the Eligibility Requirements?
General entry and prior learning
A university degree or CPA license is not a universal prerequisite. Candidates without an appropriate accounting background can begin through foundational study, including CIMA’s Certificate in Business Accounting. Current FLP offerings also describe foundational learning. Applicants with relevant degrees, professional qualifications, or approved experience may receive exemptions or enter at a later level. Placement must be confirmed through the issuer’s process.
Applicants should provide accurate qualification and experience information and obtain an exemption decision before committing to tuition. An exemption recognizes prior learning; it does not remove all remaining assessment, experience, or membership obligations. Regional executive and academic gateways have their own admission conditions and should not be treated as universally available shortcuts.
Practical experience
CIMA’s practical experience requirements, or PER, require three years of verified relevant experience on a full-time-equivalent basis. Experience may be accumulated before, during, or after examinations. Part-time work can count proportionately. The application must demonstrate relevant work activities and professional skills, not simply three years on an employer’s payroll. Supporting supervisors verify the experience submitted.
CIMA candidates can submit PER after passing the Management Case Study and accumulating the required experience. Completing PER early does not replace the remaining Strategic-level requirements.
U.S. CPA-specific entry
The AICPA CGMA Career Accelerator is an example of an accelerated route for individuals who currently hold or previously held a valid CPA license. Participation requires active AICPA membership. The program still requires the Strategic Case Study examination and satisfaction of practical-experience requirements; CPA status does not automatically confer CGMA.
8. How Do You Earn the Credential?
Step 1: Establish your route and entry point
Register through the applicable AICPA or CIMA process, disclose prior qualifications and experience, and obtain confirmation of exemptions. Choose the available learning arrangement that fits your starting point: self-tailored study, a tuition provider, FLP, or an approved accelerated program. Regional availability matters.
Step 2: Complete the required knowledge assessments
On the full self-tailored professional route, candidates take nine objective tests, three at each level. Each is a 90-minute, computer-based assessment containing 60 questions. Tests are available on demand. Provisional results are normally immediate, followed by confirmation within 48 hours. Approved exemptions reduce the number a particular candidate must take.
FLP replaces separately scheduled objective tests with assessments embedded in digital learning. It does not eliminate assessment or the applicable case-study examinations. Completing learning modules or earning an intermediate skills certificate is not the same as receiving CGMA.
Step 3: Pass the applicable case studies
The full route has Operational, Management, and Strategic Case Study examinations. Each lasts three hours and simulates finance work at the relevant level. Examination windows occur in February, May, August, and November. Candidates complete the required assessments or obtain exemptions at a level before its case study. Case-study results are generally available about six weeks after the examination window.
Preparation includes advance business-case information and practice with role-based responses. Pearson VUE provides examination-interface tutorials and case-study practice materials. Candidates should check the current delivery, permitted-materials, identification, and online-proctoring rules before booking.
Objective tests use a scaled passing score of 100 out of 150; case studies use 80 out of 150. These are not percentages of questions answered correctly. The scale accounts for differences between examination versions.
Step 4: Obtain experience approval and formal admission
Submit the required experience evidence, secure verification, and complete the applicable membership and award process. Passing the final examination alone does not authorize use of CGMA.
Allow for unsuccessful attempts in both scheduling and budgeting. FLP packages may include limited case-study credits that expire with the subscription. A subscription term is therefore a commercial access period, not a promise that qualification will be completed within that period.
9. How Long Does It Take, and How Do Candidates Prepare?
Prerequisite-building time: A candidate without relevant experience must accumulate the required three years, although work and study can overlap. Experienced applicants may already satisfy much of that requirement.
Study time: CIMA describes approximately four years as an average for the self-tailored professional route. Exemptions can shorten the academic journey substantially. By contrast, the U.S. CPA Career Accelerator is a 12-week program, but that duration covers its structured teaching, not the acquisition of all qualifying experience or guaranteed award.
Preparation resources: Official materials include syllabuses, blueprints, the CGMA Study Hub, practice cases, examination tutorials, and route-specific learning content. Self-study candidates select resources separately; FLP integrates learning and assessment.
Preparation choices: Prioritize timed written recommendations as well as technical exercises. A useful practice answer explains the business consequence, identifies assumptions, and recommends an action. Leave administrative time for exemption decisions, examination results, supervisor verification, and final admission rather than planning around study time alone.
10. How Much Does the Credential Cost?
Prices below are published examples applicable in September 2026, not a universal CGMA fee. Location, entry point, subscription length, membership status, and assessment attempts affect the total.
U.S. CPA route example
AICPA lists the CGMA Career Accelerator course at US$2,200. Its program description also specifies a US$550 examination fee associated with two Strategic Case Study attempts. Taken together, these imply a US$2,750 course-and-examination budget before applicable discounts, taxes, membership, or other application charges. Active AICPA membership is required, so nonmembers must add their membership cost. This is a program subtotal, not a guaranteed all-in credential price.
CIMA learning-route examples
The published GBP-priced FLP offering lists one-year subscriptions of £1,600 for Skills Core, £2,000 for Skills Plus, and £3,000 for Skills Premium, excluding applicable taxes. Core does not include case-study examination entry or case-study preparation. Plus includes preparation and two credits per applicable case study; Premium adds live teaching and tutor support. Confirm the regional package rather than assuming every FLP subscription is fully inclusive.
For self-tailored study, published CIMA registration is £99, including the first year’s subscription. The standard 2026 candidate annual subscription is £150 thereafter; examinations and learning materials are additional.
Other costs: Budget separately for optional tuition, additional examination attempts, subscription extensions, applicable experience or admission charges, and continuing member dues. Before purchasing, request a route-specific breakdown distinguishing included services from later charges.
11. How Do Holders Maintain the Credential?
CGMA is not an unrestricted lifetime right to use professional letters. Holders must maintain the applicable membership and designation entitlements, pay required fees, and comply with professional-development and ethical obligations. CIMA members who discontinue membership or lose their entitlement through disciplinary action may not continue using the designation.
CIMA professional development
CIMA uses a needs-based continuing professional development approach rather than prescribing a universal annual number of hours. Members should identify development needs, undertake suitable activities, and record what they learned. Activities can include formal courses and relevant workplace learning. Records may be selected for monitoring.
Failure to provide adequate CPD records can result in financial penalties and disciplinary action. Retirement, maternity leave, or periods outside paid work may affect monitoring requirements, but members should obtain confirmation rather than assume an exemption.
AICPA and CPA obligations
AICPA’s general membership CPE rule requires 120 hours, or its equivalent, over each three-year reporting period. U.S. CPAs must separately satisfy their state board’s requirements. Do not substitute CIMA’s hours-free approach for obligations attached to AICPA membership or a CPA license.
For a lapsed CIMA membership, readmission can involve a readmission fee, current subscription, and outstanding amounts from the year membership ended. Employers should verify current standing rather than rely on an old certificate.
12. What Is Its Professional Value, and What Are Its Limitations?
CGMA’s clearest professional use is as evidence of preparation for business-facing finance work. Its curriculum links accounting information with strategy, operating choices, and performance. That makes it potentially useful when a role requires more than accurate reporting, especially when finance must explain alternatives and influence decisions. This is an interpretation of the qualification’s design, not a guarantee of individual effectiveness.
A documented workplace-development application is AICPA’s Registered Apprenticeship Program for Finance Business Partners. It combines paid employment, structured on-the-job development, mentoring, and related instruction through FLP. This demonstrates a concrete employer-facing use of the qualification pathway. It does not establish that all employers require CGMA or that every apprentice has completed the final designation requirements.
For an individual deciding whether to pursue it, the practical question is the gap it fills:
- Does the target role require stronger commercial analysis or finance business partnering?
- Will the proposed route add useful learning beyond existing qualifications?
- Can the employer provide relevant assignments and experience verification?
- Does the intended labor market recognize the designation or its underlying CIMA qualification?
Do not interpret compensation differences between credential holders and other workers as a causal salary premium without accounting for experience, location, role, and employer. Likewise, the qualification’s coverage of strategy is not proof that its holder can lead a major transformation. Use the credential to inform evaluation, not replace it.
13. What Should Employers and Clients Infer From It?
What the credential establishes
A verified current holder has satisfied the admission requirements applicable to their route and remains subject to professional obligations. Current routes combine assessment and relevant experience, but exemptions and historical arrangements mean employers should not assume everyone completed nine objective tests and three case studies. Record the qualifying route and award year as part of diligence.
What still requires evaluation
Assess industry knowledge, project scale, analytical quality, communication, stakeholder influence, and implementation results separately. A case-study examination tests performance in a controlled simulation. Verified experience provides additional evidence, but neither establishes that the person has delivered your particular assignment.
For a profitability analytics workstream, request a sanitized example showing how the candidate selected cost drivers, reconciled operational and financial data, distinguished allocation from avoidable cost, and translated findings into a decision. For manufacturing work, add evidence of understanding capacity, yield, and product mix.
Three questions to assess applied competence
- A product appears unprofitable after overhead allocation. How would you decide whether to discontinue it? A useful answer distinguishes avoidable costs, contribution, capacity constraints, and strategic effects rather than relying only on reported product profit.
- A business consistently beats its budget but generates less cash than forecast. How would you investigate? Look for separation of earnings and cash, working-capital analysis, timing effects, forecast assumptions, and incentives that may encourage budget manipulation.
- How would you present an attractive capital investment when its demand forecast and sustainability assumptions are uncertain? A useful answer combines cash-flow analysis, scenarios, explicit assumptions, nonfinancial considerations, and a decision or review plan.
An individual’s CGMA also does not establish a firm’s authorization to provide regulated services. Check any required individual and firm permissions separately.
14. How Does It Compare With Related Credentials?
- CMA, Certified Management Accountant: IMA’s certification is a close subject-matter alternative, covering management accounting and financial management through two examination parts. It requires qualifying education or an accepted professional credential and relevant experience, generally two years. CGMA’s full route is more explicitly staged through Operational, Management, and Strategic levels. Neither is a U.S. public-accounting license.
- U.S. CPA, Certified Public Accountant: This is a jurisdiction-issued license rather than the same type of designation. It requires the Uniform CPA Examination and the applicable education, experience, and other licensing conditions. It can complement CGMA for accountants combining regulated accounting responsibilities with business leadership. CGMA does not confer CPA licensure.
- ACCA, Chartered Certified Accountant: ACCA membership follows a broader accountancy qualification covering areas including reporting, audit, taxation, and financial management. The current route includes up to 13 examinations, an ethics and professional skills module, and 36 months of relevant experience. It is an alternative professional-accountancy pathway; local practice rights require separate consideration.
CIMA versus CGMA is not a comparison of two unrelated qualifications. CIMA is the professional body. ACMA and FCMA identify its associate and fellow membership grades, while CGMA is the global management-accounting designation. Qualified CIMA membership and CGMA are closely connected, not independent examinations to collect separately.
15. How Can You Verify the Credential and Use Its Letters Correctly?
Start with AICPA & CIMA’s official membership directories. In the credential/designation search, select CGMA and search using the holder’s name, location, or postal code. Ask the individual for their full professional name, membership body, and member identifier if clarification is needed. A name match alone is insufficient where identities could be confused.
Check that the result concerns the designation, not merely candidate or general membership status. Where relevant, also check published disciplinary information or seek direct confirmation from the professional body. Members can request omission from public directories, so a missing result should trigger follow-up rather than an immediate conclusion that the claim is false.
An entitled holder may use CGMA after their name. CIMA members may also use their authorized membership letters. Candidates must not present themselves as CGMA holders merely because they are enrolled, have completed a learning certificate, or have passed the final examination while awaiting other requirements.
For former or lapsed holders, distinguish a truthful statement about past attainment from a claim of current designation status. If current membership has ended, obtain issuer guidance before using the letters in signatures, biographies, proposals, or professional profiles.
16. Frequently Asked Questions
Do you need an accounting degree to earn CGMA?
No universal accounting-degree requirement applies. Foundational routes accommodate people without that background, while relevant qualifications may support exemptions. The correct starting point depends on the applicant’s prior learning and the route available in their location.
Does becoming a CPA automatically make you a CGMA?
No. Current CPA-focused programs require additional steps, including the Strategic Case Study and relevant experience. Early AICPA admission arrangements differed, so a long-standing holder’s legitimate route may not resemble the route offered to a new applicant today.
Is FLP a different designation from examination-based study?
No. FLP is a learning and assessment route toward CGMA. It uses embedded assessments instead of separately scheduled objective tests, while retaining applicable case studies and experience requirements. Intermediate FLP certificates are not substitutes for the completed designation.
Can you use CGMA immediately after passing the Strategic Case Study?
Not unless all remaining requirements and formal admission are complete. Examination success and designation entitlement are different milestones. Candidates still awaiting practical-experience approval or membership admission should describe their actual status rather than use CGMA as a post-nominal.
17. Official Resources and Recent Changes
Official resources: AICPA & CIMA provide qualification syllabuses, assessment blueprints, learning support, practical-experience guidance, fee information, professional-development rules, and verification directories. Candidates should use documents applicable to their route and examination sitting.
Current changes: The 2026 refresh emphasizes business partnering, critical thinking, sustainability, and emerging technology. The 2026/2027 case-study blueprints apply to May, August, and November 2026 and February 2027.
Announced future assessment cycle: The published 2027/2028 case-study blueprints apply beginning with May 2027, not to the remaining 2026 sittings. Candidates preparing across that boundary should distinguish the applicable versions rather than combine their requirements.
