At the age of 24, I wanted to get to know some people in Norfolk who weren’t on my submarine, so I decided to organize an ice cream social for my apartment complex.
I picked a date, printed announcements, and then taped them to everyone’s door.
On the appointed day, I bought five 5-gallon tubs of ice cream, a bunch of cones, set up a table in the lawn, and waited to see if people would show up.
About 100 people came to mingle, people who had passed one another in the parking lot but had not previously had the social permission to introduce themselves.
Fun afternoon.
A year later, a couple stopped by my apartment. They told me they had met at the ice cream social, got engaged six months later, and just returned from their honeymoon.
