Overview

New America is a progressive think tank whose Open Technology Institute (OTI) is a long-standing voice on algorithmic accountability, platform power, and digital rights. Its AI-policy work centers on fairness, transparency, and accountability in the algorithmic systems that increasingly shape public and private decisions.

AI-Focused Regulatory Work

Where the national-security shops focus on chips and competition, OTI keeps the spotlight on rights: whether an algorithmic decision in hiring, lending, or housing can be understood, contested, and held accountable. That civil-liberties framing has made New America a reliable counterweight in AI-policy debates and a frequent convener of the fairness-accountability-transparency community.

Notable AI Policy Work

  • OTI research on ranking and recommendation algorithms — how they shape what people see, and how platforms should be held accountable for them.
  • Analysis translating the EU AI Act for U.S. policymakers, and work on Executive Order 14110 and OMB’s agency-AI governance memo.
  • Proposals for AI transparency tools, including ‘data nutrition labels’ (the SAUL label) to make model behavior legible to consumers.
