Overview
AI Now is a research institute that exists, in its own words, to challenge the current trajectory of AI and bring it in line with the public interest. Led by co-EDs Amba Kak and Sarah Myers West — both former senior AI advisors at the FTC — it focuses on algorithmic accountability, concentrated corporate power, and the political economy of AI.
AI-Focused Regulatory Work
AI Now punches well above its size because its leaders have been inside the regulator’s chair: Kak and Myers West both served in the FTC’s Office of Policy Planning, and Kak was named to TIME’s 2024 list of the most influential people in AI. That combination of policy fluency and structural critique — focusing on power and political economy rather than just model behavior — makes AI Now one of the sharpest accountability-oriented voices in the field.
Notable AI Policy Work
- Published ‘Artificial Power: AI Now 2025 Landscape’ (June 2025), a flagship report reframing AI policy around concentrated market power and the handful of firms dominating the frontier-model market.
- Deep work on algorithmic accountability in the public sector — how governments use (and should govern) automated decision systems.
- Notably declines funding from the corporate donors whose practices its work examines, reinforcing its independence.
