Understanding Gamer Profiles: The Spectrum from Fans to Casual Players

Today’s gamers are not just players; they are a varied group with different levels of engagement and motivations. This article describes the differences in Newzoo’s Gamer Segmentation™ study, providing insights to break down gamers into categories and segments to help businesses better connect to their ideal gamer audience profile:

Game Fans: These are the most passionate gamers who live and breathe gaming. They are deeply involved in every aspect of the gaming world, from playing to watching content, engaging in community discussions, and staying updated on the latest trends.

Regular Players: This group enjoys gaming frequently but balances it with other activities. They may not be as deeply immersed as Game Fans, but they still dedicate a significant amount of time and energy to playing and occasionally engaging with gaming content.

Casual Gamers: Casual Gamers play games to fill time or for occasional entertainment. They tend to prefer mobile games and are less likely to engage in the broader gaming culture outside of playing.

Newzoo also broke gamers down into “personas” based on the differences in behaviors and motivations they contain and how they engage with games. Below are the 8 personas that exist across the 3 categories above:

The Ultimate Gamer: Fully immersed in the gaming experience, dedicating time and money to games above all else.

The All-Round Enthusiast: Engages with every aspect of gaming, from playing to viewing and participating in communities.

The Community Gamer: Focuses on the social and communal aspects of gaming, engaging in discussions, forums, and news.

The Hardware Enthusiast: Prioritizes having the best gaming equipment, staying updated on the latest tech trends.

The Bargain Buyer: Enjoys high-quality games, but also spends time seeking out free or discounted titles, and is selective about spending on hardware.

The Backseat Viewer: Prefers watching games, especially esports, and relives their gaming passion through others.

The Popcorn Gamer: Enjoys watching others play but doesn’t play much themselves.

The Time Filler: Plays games when there is extra time to spare, often choosing mobile games for quick entertainment.
