Aerospace and defense manufacturing. Lockheed Martin Aeronautics assembles F‑35 and legacy F‑16 aircraft in Fort Worth, and Bell Flight advances rotorcraft and tiltrotor programs with suppliers across North Texas. Naval Air Station Joint Reserve Base Fort Worth supports sustainment and training missions.
AllianceTexas logistics platform. The AllianceTexas development centers on Fort Worth Alliance Airport and a major BNSF intermodal facility, creating an integrated air, rail, and highway hub. E‑commerce, automotive, and industrial distributors scale quickly on this network.
Rail headquarters and freight connectivity. BNSF Railway is headquartered in Fort Worth, anchoring Class I rail expertise that ties the region to national corridors. I‑35W, I‑20, I‑30, I‑820, and nearby DFW International Airport extend fast reach to U.S. and global markets.
Western heritage and cultural institutions. The Fort Worth Stockyards National Historic District and the Fort Worth Stock Show & Rodeo reflect the city’s cattle era identity. The Kimbell Art Museum, Amon Carter Museum, and the Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth reinforce a strong cultural economy.
Employers choose Fort Worth for aerospace depth, rail and air connectivity, and scalable industrial sites, and Umbrex connects them with independent consultants who know how to deliver across the Metroplex.
Fort Worth’s economy began on a bluff above the Trinity River where trails crossed near the confluence of the Clear and West Forks. Indigenous peoples traveled these corridors for centuries. In 1849 the U.S. Army established Fort Worth as part of a frontier line named for General William Jenkins Worth, selecting high ground that offered defense and a vantage over river bottoms. After the Army withdrew in the 1850s, merchants and ranchers built a town that served wagon trains and nearby farms on the prairie.
Cattle transformed the settlement after the Civil War. Fort Worth became a principal outfitting point for herds moving toward Red River crossings on the Chisholm Trail in the late 1860s and 1870s, earning the nickname Cowtown. Railroads cemented that role. The Texas and Pacific Railway reached the city in 1876 after a locally led push to keep the line from bypassing the community. With rail in place, the Fort Worth Union Stockyards rose in the 1890s and the Livestock Exchange Building opened in 1902, while large packing plants operated by firms such as Armour and Swift began production in the early 1900s. Hotels, banks, and streetcars extended a commercial grid that served ranch country and new neighborhoods alike.
Military and aviation activity added new pillars in the 20th century. Camp Bowie trained soldiers during World War I. In 1942 the federal government built Air Force Plant 4 for Consolidated Aircraft to produce B‑24 bombers, and adjacent airfields evolved into Carswell Air Force Base in 1948. The complex later supported B‑36 and B‑52 bombers during the Cold War. Over decades the aircraft plant passed through Convair and General Dynamics to Lockheed Martin, which today assembles advanced fighters. Naval Air Station Joint Reserve Base Fort Worth now occupies the former Carswell site, maintaining a significant defense presence.
Highways and airports reorganized commerce after World War II. Interstates I‑35W, I‑20, and I‑30 threaded through the region between the 1950s and 1970s, enabling truck distribution and suburban growth. Dallas Fort Worth International Airport opened in 1974 between the two core cities, creating a global passenger and air cargo platform that accelerated corporate travel and trade. Downtown and cultural investments sustained the central city, while industrial parks spread along new interchanges.
A new logistics chapter began in the late 1980s. Fort Worth Alliance Airport opened in 1989 as a cargo focused facility within the AllianceTexas development, pairing airside access with a large BNSF intermodal yard and direct highway links. The project helped attract manufacturers, suppliers, and e‑commerce operators that valued fast multimodal turns. Rail influence deepened when the Burlington Northern and Santa Fe railroads merged in 1995 to form BNSF Railway with headquarters in Fort Worth. In the 2000s the Barnett Shale brought a surge in natural gas production across Tarrant County, modernizing pipeline and services networks and injecting capital into local firms and infrastructure.
Today Fort Worth integrates a frontier fort and cattle outfitting town, a rail built stockyards and packing center, a Cold War and modern aerospace manufacturing hub, and a global logistics platform anchored by AllianceTexas and DFW International. Universities and medical institutions expand research and workforce, while museums and the Stockyards sustain a distinctive brand that attracts residents and visitors. Umbrex helps organizations navigate this platform by connecting them with consultants who understand regulated manufacturing, corridor logistics, and site selection from the cultural district and downtown to Alliance, the Stockyards, and interstate served industrial corridors.
