Kansas Business Snapshot

What Kansas is known for

Central U.S. crossroads. Kansas sits at the junction of I-70 and I-35 with Class I rail coverage from BNSF and Union Pacific, plus major intermodal assets in the Kansas City area and air cargo through Wichita. This network links producers to customers across the Midwest, Southwest, and coasts.

Air Capital of the World. Wichita anchors a global aviation cluster in general aviation, aerostructures, and defense work. Companies and Wichita State University’s National Institute for Aviation Research support certification, composites, and advanced manufacturing.

Wheat, beef, and animal health. Hard winter wheat, sorghum, cattle, and feed processing define a durable farm and food economy. Kansas State University’s Biosecurity Research Institute and the National Bio and Agro-Defense Facility in Manhattan strengthen the state’s role in animal health and ag bioscience.

Energy and natural resources. Oil fields from El Dorado to the Mid-Continent, the Hugoton gas area, helium recovery, and large-scale wind development power industry and communities. Service firms, pipelines, and transmission corridors round out an energy-savvy ecosystem.

Why employers choose Kansas

Employers choose Kansas for multimodal reach, engineering and ag-bioscience talent, and scalable sites, and Umbrex connects them with consultants who know how to execute statewide.

  • North–south and east–west connectivity on I-35 and I-70, dual Class I rail, and intermodal hubs that compress time to market.
  • Aviation and advanced manufacturing depth centered in Wichita with testing, certification, and supplier capacity.
  • Ag research and animal health leadership through Kansas State University, the National Bio and Agro-Defense Facility, and the Kansas City Animal Health Corridor.
  • Reliable energy mix and infrastructure, including oil, gas, wind resources, and robust transmission that support industrial operations.
  • Scalable, rail-served, and airport-adjacent industrial parks across the state with predictable permitting and utilities.
  • Proximity to dense customer bases in the Plains and Midwest with a practical, cost-effective operating footprint.

A brief economic history of Kansas

Kansas’s economic foundations are geographic. Great Plains grasslands bridge the Mississippi basin and the Rocky Mountain interior, while the Kansas, Smoky Hill, Republican, and Arkansas rivers carved routes used by Indigenous nations for trade and seasonal travel. In 1821 the Santa Fe Trail opened as a commercial highway from the Missouri River across what became Kansas to New Mexico, and military posts followed to protect traffic. Fort Leavenworth was established in 1827 on the Missouri River, and Fort Riley in 1853 near the junction of the Smoky Hill and Republican, anchoring supply, surveying, and migration.

The Kansas–Nebraska Act of 1854 created the territory and set in motion violent political struggles that ended with statehood in 1861. Railroads quickly reshaped settlement and markets. The Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe was chartered in 1859 and pushed southwest across the plains, while the Union Pacific’s eastern division crossed the state toward Denver. Cattle trails from Texas met the rails at Abilene beginning in 1867, then at Newton and Dodge City, spawning stockyards, leather works, and banking houses that financed herds and land. Homesteaders adapted prairie agriculture, and in the 1870s hard winter wheat known as Turkey Red, brought by Volga German immigrants, proved well suited to the climate, making wheat a staple of the state’s export economy.

Processing and distribution followed the harvests. Elevators, mills, and packing houses clustered along sidings and river towns, while irrigation spread across the west with wells drawing on the High Plains aquifer. Oil and gas added a new economic layer in the early 20th century. The El Dorado field, discovered in 1915, became one of the most productive in the Mid-Continent region and fueled World War I refining. The Hugoton gas field, identified in 1927 across southwest Kansas, supported pipelines, helium extraction, and fertilizer and power generation that underpinned industry and towns.

Aviation defined the next wave of industrialization. Wichita’s early manufacturers, including Cessna and Beech, emerged in the 1920s, and Boeing’s wartime production of bombers in Wichita scaled a skilled workforce and supplier base. Postwar, general aviation, aerostructures, and defense programs kept factories and test facilities busy, and Wichita State University’s research programs deepened ties between engineering and the shop floor. Across the state, university research at the University of Kansas and Kansas State advanced materials, medicine, and agriculture, while Fort Riley and Fort Leavenworth continued training and leadership missions that supported local suppliers and services.

The interstate era tied Kansas more tightly to continental trade. The Federal-Aid Highway Act of 1956, championed by President Dwight D. Eisenhower of Abilene, launched a system on which Kansas was an early builder, with I-70 stretching across the state and I-35 linking to Mexico-bound corridors. Containerization and rail mergers reorganized freight into high-capacity corridors, and BNSF’s Logistics Park Kansas City opened in 2013 on the Kansas side of the metro as a major intermodal gateway. In parallel, wind energy projects rose across the High Plains, modern transmission expanded, and refineries and midstream assets upgraded operations.

In the 21st century the state added new capabilities in biosafety and animal health. Manhattan’s National Bio and Agro-Defense Facility began operations in 2023, complementing Kansas State’s Biosecurity Research Institute and strengthening a cross-border Animal Health Corridor that includes research, diagnostics, and vaccine development. Today Kansas integrates agriculture and food processing, aviation and advanced manufacturing, oil, gas, and wind energy, and a logistics platform of interstates, Class I rail, and intermodal hubs. Umbrex helps organizations capitalize on these strengths by connecting them with consultants who understand aerospace supply chains, animal health partnerships, and corridor-based distribution that runs from shop floor to mainline rail.
