Technology, gaming, and design. Broadcom’s longstanding presence, software firms, and gaming studios such as Blizzard Entertainment reflect a strong engineering base. Automotive headquarters and design studios for brands like Hyundai and Kia, along with Rivian, add product development depth.

Employers choose Orange County for a powerful mix of talent, connectivity, and quality of life, and Umbrex helps teams translate these strengths into performance.
Orange County’s economy began with geography. Coastal bluffs, fertile valleys, and the Santa Ana River supported Indigenous communities, including the Acjachemen and Tongva, who traded across the region’s land and maritime routes. Spanish colonization introduced mission agriculture at Mission San Juan Capistrano in 1776, while hides and tallow left the coast via coves near present-day Dana Point. Ranchos organized the landscape through the Mexican era, producing cattle and grains tied to coastal shipping and inland trails.
After California statehood, American settlers expanded irrigation and diversified crops. Anaheim was founded in 1857 as a wine colony, then shifted to citrus after disease and market pressures. The county was carved out of Los Angeles County in 1889, a political milestone that brought local control over roads, water, and schools. Railroads linked farm towns to distant markets, with the Santa Fe connection in the late 1880s and Pacific Electric interurban lines arriving in the early 1900s. Packinghouses in Orange, Fullerton, and Santa Ana processed citrus, walnuts, and sugar beets, turning agriculture into an export engine.
Oil discoveries transformed the economy at the turn of the century. Fields in Brea and the Olinda foothills in the 1890s, followed by Huntington Beach in 1920, attracted capital, skilled labor, and refineries, creating early industrial clusters. The federal navigation project that dredged and stabilized Newport Harbor in the 1930s reshaped the coast for boating, ship services, and recreation. Small airfields appeared across the county, and what became John Wayne Airport grew from a 1920s landing strip into a regional commercial gateway.
World War II and the Cold War accelerated industrialization and logistics. Marine Corps Air Station El Toro and the Tustin blimp base, commissioned in the early 1940s, brought aviation, maintenance, and supplier networks. Postwar freeway construction connected new suburbs to employment centers, and large-scale master planning by the Irvine Company set a template for integrated neighborhoods, business parks, and open space. Disneyland opened in 1955 in Anaheim, catalyzing hospitality, retail, and entertainment jobs, while the Anaheim Convention Center opened in 1967 to capture year-round events. The University of California, Irvine, established in 1965, added a research anchor that would later spur engineering and biomedical innovation.
By the late 20th century, Orange County had transitioned from fields and derricks to diversified manufacturing and services. Semiconductor and networking firms grew along the Irvine Spectrum, while medical device pioneers scaled in and around Irvine and Santa Ana. Base realignments closed El Toro and Tustin in the 1990s, unlocking large redevelopment sites that evolved into the Great Park area and mixed-use districts, even as the historic wooden hangars became landmarks. New toll roads complemented existing freeways, and Metrolink commuter rail linked job centers to the broader Southern California labor market.
In the 21st century, technology layered onto long-standing strengths. Life sciences firms advanced structural heart, monitoring, and ophthalmic platforms, drawing on UCI and a seasoned supplier base. Software and gaming companies matured from startup roots to global players, while automotive brands expanded North American design and headquarters functions. Tourism diversified beyond theme parks to coastal resorts, sports, and cultural events. Close ties to the San Pedro Bay port complex and multiple airports keep supply chains fluid for medtech, consumer products, and high-value electronics. Today the county’s economy blends research-driven industries, advanced manufacturing, hospitality, and professional services. Umbrex works with executive teams to navigate this evolution and capitalize on Orange County’s durable advantages.
