A brief economic history of Mexico City

Mexico City’s economy is rooted in the Valley of Mexico, a high basin once dominated by interconnected lakes that offered transport, food, and defensive advantages. The Mexica founded Tenochtitlan on an island in Lake Texcoco in 1325, building causeways, aqueducts, and chinampa gardens that sustained a large urban population and linked markets across the basin. Geography made the site a natural hub, with routes over surrounding passes tying the plateau to the Gulf and Pacific coasts.

In 1521 Spanish forces and their Indigenous allies conquered Tenochtitlan and established Mexico City atop its ruins as the capital of New Spain. The inland location required reliable overland logistics. Roads led east to Veracruz, the main Atlantic port, and southwest to Acapulco, the Pacific outlet for the Manila galleons. Silver from Zacatecas and other northern districts, cochineal, and agricultural surpluses flowed through warehouses and counting houses in the capital. Engineers pursued large-scale drainage beginning in the early 1600s to control flooding, while aqueducts from Chapultepec and springs in the hills supplied water to growing neighborhoods and convents.

After independence in 1821, Mexico City remained the political and commercial center through decades of conflict and reform. The mid to late 19th century brought railways that transformed costs and time. A line to Veracruz opened in 1873, integrating the capital with Atlantic trade, and additional routes tied the basin to the north and west. Under the Porfirian modernization drive, the city gained boulevards, tramways, telegraph and telephone systems, and new public buildings. Revolutionary upheaval from 1910 disrupted commerce but also recast institutions and labor relations. In 1938 the oil expropriation signaled a new national development model, and import substitution policies from the 1940s to the 1970s concentrated manufacturing, finance, and federal agencies in and around the capital.

Mid 20th century projects reshaped mobility and scale. Mexico City International Airport evolved from early airfields into the country’s main gateway, ring roads and arterials pushed urbanization outward, and housing and industrial estates extended into the State of Mexico. The 1968 Olympic Games accelerated sports venues and roads, and the Metro opened in 1969, reorganizing commuting across the expanding metropolis. Draining and canalizing remnants of the lake system created land for growth but heightened long-term water management challenges, shaping later investment in aquifers, treatment, and resilience.

Late 20th century shocks and reforms redirected the economy. The 1985 earthquake triggered major building code upgrades and a surge in civil society capacity. Trade liberalization in the late 1980s and the North American agreement in 1994 integrated the capital more tightly with continental supply chains, even as much large-footprint manufacturing dispersed toward the Bajío and neighboring states. Business districts such as Santa Fe rose on former quarries and landfills, while cultural assets and historic neighborhoods drew tourism and creative industries. Bus rapid transit launched in 2005, expanding high-capacity surface mobility, and airport terminals were modernized to handle rising international traffic.

In the 2010s and early 2020s the city deepened its role as a command center for finance, media, technology, health, and public administration. The Felipe Ángeles International Airport opened in 2022 to complement Mexico City International Airport and diversify routes, while rail and highway upgrades improved ties to Puebla, Querétaro, Toluca, and other regional hubs. Universities expanded programs in data, life sciences, and engineering, and digital networks supported fintech, e-commerce, and shared services that operate at national scale. Today Mexico City integrates an island metropolis on a lake, a colonial capital linking oceans by road, a 20th century manufacturing and administrative powerhouse, and a modern services, finance, and creative hub connected by airports, metro and BRT lines, and national corridors. Umbrex helps organizations leverage this platform by pairing them with consultants who understand regulated sectors, corridor logistics, and site selection from the Historic Center and Reforma to Polanco, Santa Fe, and the broader metropolitan belt.
