Costa Rica Business Snapshot

What Costa Rica is known for

Conservation and eco‑tourism leadership. A national park system created in the 1970s and a pioneering payments for environmental services program support biodiversity and watershed protection. These commitments underpin a robust visitor economy that ranges from cloud forests to Pacific and Caribbean coasts.

Medical devices and advanced manufacturing. Multinationals and suppliers produce implants, disposables, and precision components in free trade zones around the Central Valley. Quality systems, clean rooms, and export know‑how have made medical devices a leading nontraditional export.

Reliable renewable energy. A grid anchored by hydropower, complemented by geothermal fields in the volcanic cordilleras and growing wind assets, provides dependable electricity for industry. Utilities and research agencies collaborate on process efficiency and sustainability goals.

Trade gateways by sea and air. A modern container terminal at Moín on the Caribbean, Pacific facilities at Caldera, and international airports at San José and Liberia connect producers to North American and global markets. The Inter‑American Highway and Route 27 tie the Central Valley to ports and tourism corridors.

Why employers choose Costa Rica

Employers choose Costa Rica for stable institutions, skilled bilingual talent, and practical port and airport access. Umbrex connects them with independent consultants who know how to deliver across the country.

  • Multimodal connectivity through Juan Santamaría and Liberia international airports, a deepwater container terminal at Moín, Pacific access at Caldera, and highway links across the Central Valley.
  • STEM and professional pipelines from the University of Costa Rica, Tecnológico de Costa Rica, Universidad Nacional, INCAE, and the National Training Institute aligned to engineering, life sciences, and operations.
  • Cluster depth in medical devices and life sciences, electronics and advanced manufacturing, agrifood and seafood, shared services and software, and tourism and hospitality.
  • Diverse real estate from free trade zones and science parks in Alajuela, Heredia, and Cartago to coastal logistics sites and resort‑linked commercial space with dependable power, water, and fiber.
  • Rule of law, a broad trade agreement network, and predictable customs regimes that streamline export operations and compliance.
  • Renewable energy and environmental expertise that support sustainability targets and continuous operations.

A brief economic history of Costa Rica

Costa Rica’s economy is rooted in the Central Valley, a temperate plateau whose rivers drain to both the Pacific and the Caribbean. Indigenous communities cultivated maize and cacao and traded across the isthmus long before Spanish rule. The Spanish founded Cartago in 1563 as a highland administrative center, and early colonial production mixed smallholder agriculture with cacao on the Caribbean slopes and tobacco in the Central Valley. Geography dictated logistics. Mule trails crossed the mountains to Pacific landings at Puntarenas, while rough routes to the Caribbean coast faced swamps and disease that limited development for centuries.

Independence in 1821 accelerated an export pivot to coffee. By the 1830s and 1840s the state improved the road to Puntarenas so that oxcarts could carry coffee from San José, Heredia, and Alajuela to Pacific ships. Profits from the “golden bean” financed schools, public buildings, and the first banks, and a merchant elite emerged that reinvested in roads and processing mills. A defining infrastructure project began under President Tomás Guardia in 1871, when contracts were signed to build a railway from the Central Valley to the Caribbean. Engineer and entrepreneur Minor C. Keith led construction through dense rainforest and steep terrain, completing the Atlantic railroad to the new port at Limón in 1890. Keith’s parallel development of banana plantations along the line created a second export pillar, and the formation of United Fruit in 1899 entwined Costa Rica with global commodity circuits.

The early 20th century balanced coffee and bananas with institutional consolidation. Public health and education expanded, and San José grew into the administrative and commercial hub. The 1948 civil conflict ended with the rise of a reformist coalition led by José Figueres Ferrer. The 1949 constitution abolished the standing army, redirected resources to social investment, and established a framework for democratic stability. The Costa Rican Electricity Institute was created in 1949 to extend electrification and telecommunications, later developing large hydropower schemes and, from the 1990s, geothermal generation at volcanic fields in the northwestern highlands. Social security, founded earlier in 1941, scaled nationwide health services and reinforced human capital.

After debt pressures in the 1980s, the country diversified beyond traditional agriculture. A free trade zone regime attracted export manufacturers in the 1990s, and in 1997 Intel announced a major assembly and test facility near San José, catalyzing supplier development and skills in electronics and quality management. Medical devices followed as firms established clean room operations across Alajuela, Heredia, and Cartago, turning life sciences into a leading export by the 2000s. Tourism surged as national parks, first organized in the 1970s, matured into an international brand and conservation policies expanded forest cover. Trade agreements broadened market access, and the Central America–Dominican Republic agreement took effect for Costa Rica in 2009, deepening integration with North American value chains.

Recent infrastructure strengthened global links and internal mobility. A modern container terminal at Moín opened in 2019, shifting most Caribbean cargo to a high-capacity platform. Route 27 between San José and Caldera entered service in 2010, improving travel times to the Pacific. Airport upgrades at San José and Liberia expanded passenger and belly cargo capacity to key hubs. Today Costa Rica integrates a highland coffee republic tied to Pacific sailings, a banana and rail corridor to Limón, a mid century social democracy that invested in people and power, and a modern mix of medical devices, electronics, agrifood, software, and tourism connected by ports, airports, and highways. Umbrex helps organizations leverage this platform by connecting them with consultants who understand regulated operations, corridor logistics, and site selection from the Central Valley free trade zones to coastal gateways and tourism districts.
