Scenario-Comparison Timeline

Two or more parallel timelines (e.g., Base vs Accelerated) on the same slide for side-by-side contrast.

Scenario‑Comparison Timeline

2  One‑Sentence Purpose Statement
Lets decision‑makers instantly see “how schedule and milestones shift under different scenarios (e.g., Base vs. Accelerated vs. Delayed).”

3  Visual Description (Designer Instructions)

  • Start with a 16 × 9 slide and draw a single horizontal time axis across the top 40 % of the canvas.
  • Below the axis, stack two (or more) identical horizontal lanes—one per scenario. Label each lane at the far left (Base Case, Accelerated, Constrained, etc.) in 11 pt bold.
  • In each lane, place milestone markers or phase bars at the dates dictated by that scenario. Align them vertically so corresponding milestones form easy‑to‑compare columns.
  • Colour‑code each scenario’s markers/bars with a distinct but coordinated palette (e.g., blue = Base, green = Accelerated, orange = Delayed). Keep milestone shapes consistent across scenarios.
  • Connect corresponding milestones across lanes with faint dotted vertical guide lines to emphasise deltas without clutter.
  • Annotate schedule deltas (e.g., “‑4 wks” or “+2 mo”) beside or beneath shifted milestones—use small call‑out boxes or inline text, colour‑matched to the affected scenario.
  • Add a vertical “Today” line through all lanes for context. Optionally shade the time window between “Today” and a milestone in each scenario to visualise the gap.
  • Reserve the top 15 % for a concise headline and legend explaining colour coding. Maintain generous white space so labels never collide with the axis or guide lines.
  • Use sans‑serif fonts: milestone labels 9 pt; axis tick labels 10 pt; scenario headings 11 pt bold.

4  Business Questions This Slide Answers

  • How much sooner (or later) do milestones land under each scenario?
  • Which scenario meets a fixed deadline or regulatory date?
  • Where do resource or cost trade‑offs materially change the timeline?
  • What is the lead time we still have under the slowest path?
  • Which milestones are immovable across all scenarios?

5  When to Use (Typical Situations)

  • Executive decision meetings weighing “fast‑track” vs. “normal” schedules.
  • Contingency planning for supply‑chain or regulatory delays.
  • Sales or marketing roadmap options tied to product‑launch timing.
  • Negotiations with vendors on expedited delivery.
  • Board updates requiring transparency on aggressive vs. realistic timelines.

6  Core Data Fields Required

  • Scenario names.
  • Milestone titles and dates for each scenario.
  • Common time axis (start and end dates).
  • Current date (“Today”) marker.

7  Optional / Advanced Data Fields

  • Numeric schedule deltas (weeks/mo) auto‑calculated and displayed.
  • Cost or resource delta per scenario shown as inline badges.
  • Probability or confidence score for each scenario.
  • Owner or accountable leader for each scenario
  • Conditional formatting (e.g., highlight milestones that slip past a contractual deadline).
