Definition
Talent mobility is a key performance indicator that measures the percentage of internal hires for open positions. This KPI is critical in assessing the effectiveness of the HR department’s talent management and internal development programs. A higher percentage indicates that the organization is successfully leveraging its existing talent pool to fill open positions.
What It Seeks to Measure
Talent mobility seeks to measure the organization’s ability to promote and move employees internally to fill open positions. It reflects the HR department’s success in developing employees, providing career growth opportunities, and retaining talent within the company. High internal hire rates suggest effective talent management practices and a strong commitment to employee development.
Data Required to Calculate the KPI
To calculate the talent mobility KPI, you will need the following data:
- Total number of open positions filled during the period.
- Total number of open positions filled by internal candidates during the period.
Step-by-Step Instructions
- Determine the period for analysis: Decide the time frame for which you want to calculate the talent mobility KPI. This could be quarterly, semi-annually, or annually.
- Identify open positions filled: Record the total number of open positions that were filled during the chosen period.
- Identify internal hires: Record the number of these positions that were filled by internal candidates.
- Calculate the internal hire rate:
- Divide the number of open positions filled by internal candidates by the total number of open positions filled.
- Multiply the result by 100 to convert it to a percentage.
Format of the Output of Analysis
The output of your analysis should include:
- Total Open Positions Filled: The total number of open positions filled during the period.
- Total Internal Hires: The number of positions filled by internal candidates.
- Internal Hire Rate: The percentage of open positions filled by internal candidates.
Example format:
- Total Open Positions Filled: 100
- Internal Hires: 60
- Internal Hire Rate: 60%
How to Interpret Results
- High Internal Hire Rate: Indicates that the organization is effective in developing and promoting its existing employees to fill open positions. This suggests strong internal talent management and development practices.
- Low Internal Hire Rate: Suggests potential gaps in internal development or talent management processes. This could indicate a reliance on external hiring and a lack of career growth opportunities for current employees.
Steps a Firm Can Take to Improve Talent Mobility
- Develop Internal Talent: Invest in training and development programs to prepare employees for higher roles and new opportunities within the company.
- Create Clear Career Paths: Establish clear career paths and growth opportunities to motivate employees and help them see potential for advancement within the company.
- Encourage Internal Applications: Promote internal job postings and encourage employees to apply for open positions within the organization.
- Implement Mentoring Programs: Establish mentoring programs to support employees in their career development and prepare them for future roles.
- Conduct Regular Talent Reviews: Regularly review and assess the talent pool to identify high-potential employees and plan for their development and movement within the company.
- Communicate Opportunities: Clearly communicate available opportunities and the process for internal mobility to all employees.
- Provide Feedback and Support: Offer regular feedback and support to employees who apply for internal positions, regardless of the outcome, to help them grow and succeed in future applications.
- Monitor and Adjust Policies: Continuously monitor talent mobility metrics and adjust policies and practices to improve internal hire rates and employee satisfaction.
